Softball America tabs Louisiana No. 19; Ragin' Cajuns land at No. 23 in USA Softball poll

LAFAYETTE - Additional national organizations have listed the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team in their preseason Top 25 rankings for the 2022 season, as announced on Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Louisiana (47-12, 21-3 Sun Belt in 2021), the two-time defending Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament champions, are ranked No. 19 by Softball America - the highest preseason ranking thus far heading into the 2022 season.
USA Softball was the third organization to give the Ragin' Cajuns a preseason Top 25 nod ahead of Year No. 5 with Gerry Glasco. Louisiana appeared at No. 23 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 preseason poll.
The latest preseason rankings add to the No. 22 slot that Louisiana landed at in the D1Softball Top 25 Preseason poll which was released on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

For the 19th consecutive season, the Ragin' Cajuns are preseason ranked in at least one poll. Louisiana has appeared in every edition of both the ESPN.com/USA Softball (began in 2006) and Softball America (began in 2019) preseason polls.

During the 2021 season, Louisiana reached 40 wins in the regular season by winning 25 of the final 29 games. The squad's march to repeat honors as Sun Belt regular season and tournament champions was highlighted by an 11-1 record, regular season and tournament combined, against the league's other three NCAA Tournament participants (Texas State, Troy and South Alabama). The Ragin' Cajuns advanced to Championship Sunday of an NCAA Regional for the third time under Glasco's watch, extending the program's streak of reaching the final round of a regional to 13 consecutive appearances.

For Glasco, his fifth season in Louisiana will have a different look and feel than the previous others: the team largely consists of players he recruited and went from being one of the oldest in the nation to one of the youngest. The Ragin' Cajuns went from a roster in 2021 that was predominantly sixth-year and fifth-year players to a group in 2022 that includes eight freshmen and 12 total newcomers.

Louisiana is armed with the nation's No. 1-ranked recruiting class of the 2021 recruits by Extra Innings Softball including the No. 4-rated recruit in pitcher Sam Landry and No. 15-rated recruit in outfielder Maddie Hayden, has first team All-Sun Belt performer Kandra Lamb back in the circle seeking to pick up where Summer Ellyson left off, and welcomes back Raina O'Neal and Taylor Roman and their power bats back to the lineup.

Louisiana, an NCAA Tournament participant each year since 1999, begins the 2022 season at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park with the 36th Annual Louisiana Classics from Feb. 11-13 – and is scheduled to spend the entire first month inside or near the city limits of Lafayette.

The official season opener is set for Friday, Feb. 11 with a 4 p.m. doubleheader vs. UAB at Lamson Park.
