Transfer adds all-conference experience and veteran presence to the Ragin’ Cajuns roster

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball head coach Kristi Gray announced on Thursday (Jan. 13) the addition of Mya Wilson (Orlando, Fla.) to the program's roster starting with the Spring 2022 semester.

An All-Sun Belt Conference performer in the 2020 season, Wilson is a right side hitter who joins the Ragin' Cajuns after competing for fellow Sun Belt member Georgia Southern from 2019-21.

Wilson has two seasons of eligibility available to compete for Louisiana, beginning with the 2022 season in the fall.

"Mya (Wilson) will help us instantly," Gray said. "Not only is she a very dynamic athlete who can play multiple positions, she is also a true competitor that I hope the rest of the team feeds off of. She is going to be a great contributor to our future success."

Over the three seasons with Georgia Southern, Wilson totaled 548 kills on a .243 hitting percentage and registered 165 total blocks (23 BS, 142 BA). She hit .220-plus and accumulated at least 150 kills and 50 blocks each season with the Eagles.

Wilson earned second team All-Sun Belt honors in 2020 after ranking ninth in the Sun Belt in points (3.44/set), 10th in hitting percentage (.265), 10th in blocks (0.88/set) and 12th in kills (2.88/set). She reached double-figure kills in eight of the 15 matches competed in during the COVID-shortened season, following up a strong collegiate debut in 2019 which saw her score at least five kills in all but three of the 26 matches she played on the way to 216 kills.

In the 2021 season, the Orlando, Fla., native produced a career-best .255 hitting percentage over 419 swings and posted a career-best 64 total blocks (11 BS, 53 BA).

Wilson prepped at Olympia (Fla.) High School where she was a two-time team captain. She earned second-team all-county honors in 2015 and 2016 and all-county honorable mention as a senior in 2018 after posting 306 kills, 191 digs and 44 aces.

She helped lead Top Select club team to the 2018 Junior Olympic National Championship game.

Wilson adds additional veteran experience to Louisiana's roster which will now include nine upperclassmen in 2022 after fielding one of the nation's youngest teams in Gray's debut season. The Ragin' Cajuns are set return a pair of All-Sun Belt performers from the 2021 season in outside hitters Kelsey Bennett and Coco Gillett.

ABOUT LOUISIANA
The 2021 season served as the inaugural campaign for Louisiana with head coach Kristi Gray, who was hired on April 26 after five highly successful seasons at Odessa College.

Much like the success she experienced in her five-year tenure at Odessa College prior to arriving in Louisiana, Gray orchestrated instant success with the Ragin' Cajuns (15-11, 9-7 Sun Belt).

Louisiana operated one of the Sun Belt's most efficient and exciting offenses by utilizing Gray's up-tempo system. The team led the conference in hitting percentage through Oct. 23, remaining in the Top 5 through season's end and finishing at .230 which is the program's rally era record.

Boosted by a clean sweep of the first round of SBC West Division play, which included the program's first-ever win over Texas State in San Marcos, Louisiana was in contention for the division title entering the month of November.
