Ragin’ Cajuns and Demons meet Saturday afternoon for final preseason tune-up

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball faces outside competition for the first time in the Kristi Gray era on Saturday, Aug. 21 when the squad travels north to Natchitoches to face in-state foe Northwestern State in an exhibition match at Prather Coliseum.

First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m. on the NSU campus.

A live video stream (paid subscription required) and live stats will be available, with links located on the Volleyball schedule page at RaginCajuns.com.

The exhibition contest offers Gray and her coaching staff an additional preseason opportunity to evaluate the squad in a competition setting. The first look came in the program's Red-White scrimmage held on Thursday (Aug. 19) at Earl K. Long Gym.

Louisiana and Northwestern State last met on the volleyball court in August 2016 at E.K. Long Gym.

It's the lone exhibition match of the preseason for the Ragin' Cajuns who will officially launch a new era in the program's history, starting the inaugural campaign under Gray's leadership, when regular season play begins at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27 vs. Southern Illinois at the Southern Miss Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The 2021 roster for Louisiana (17-7, 11-5 Sun Belt in 2020) features an even blend of nine returning players and nine newcomers who seek to build upon the program's first-ever, back-to-back seasons of double-digit wins in Sun Belt Conference play and continue the climb to the top of the league standings.

Leading the returners is 2020 All-Sun Belt performers Kelsey Bennett and Kara Barnes plus two-year starting libero Hannah Ramirez. Last season, Bennett averaged a career-best 3.2 kills and digs per set, Barnes ranked Top 10 in the Sun Belt with a .311 hitting percentage and Ramirez stretched her streak of consecutive matches with double-digit digs to 36 straight dating back to October 2019.

The Ragin' Cajuns newcomer corps is headlined by Odessa College transfers Siena DeCambra and Emery Judkins who followed Gray to Louisiana and Division I transfers Coco Gillett (SFA), Chinelo Ogogor (Wichita State) and Jordan Valley (South Florida).
