Melissa Mayeux and Newcomers Stormy Kotzelnick and Ari Quiñones Honored
LAFAYETTE - Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball was well-represented on the list of 2021 Florida Gulf Coast League All-Stars as returning utility player Melissa Mayeux and incoming transfers Stormy Kotzelnick and Ari Quiñones earned the designation for an impressive season in the summer league.
The league consists of 10 teams that play a 25-game season from June 17 to July 20, and features players from all around the country, from Power 5 schools as well as other mid-major excellent softball programs.
The Ragin' Cajuns trio participated in the FGCL's All-Star game with Mayeux competing for the "Sun" Division and Kotzelnick and Quiñones for the "Surf" Division. Mayeux was named the All-Star game MVP.
Being named FGCL All-Stars also gave the Ragin' Cajuns contingent the opportunity to face the USSSA Pride (formerly of the National Pro Fastpitch league) in a three-game series at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla. Both Mayeux and Kotzelnick participated in the series for the FGCL All-Stars.
During the regular season portion of the FGCL summer league Mayeux suited up for the Manatee Squeeze helping lead the squad to the No. 1 seed in the FGCL playoffs. Kotzelnick wound up in the champions circle at the end of the playoffs as she and the Sarasota Circus captured the title.
Mayeux hit .429 (27-for-63) with 10 extra base hits (four doubles, six home runs) and 21 RBI over 73 plate appearances for the Squeeze. The rising senior ranked Top 10 in the FGCL for average and posted 10 multiple-hit games and six multiple-RBI outings.
Kotzelnick, the FGCL's Rookie of the Year in 2020, sported a .425 average (31-for-73) with seven home runs, 20 RBI and 21 walks to just eight strikeouts. In the championship series of the playoffs she delivered a key three-run home run in Game 1 and a clutch two-out, two-run double in Game 2. Kotzelnick ranked Top 10 in the league in on base percentage (.558) OPS (1.366), home runs (7) and walks (21).
Quiñones played for the Myakka City River Mocs and turned in a .371 average (26-for-70) over 71 plate appearances. She generated six doubles, scored 12 runs and produced 11 RBI.Â
Mayeux has been a member of the Ragin' Cajuns roster since the 2020 season, having played all four infield positions and left field, and enters her senior season next spring. In the 2021 season, the native of France posted 10 extra base hits (three doubles, three triples and four home runs), produced 26 RBI and shined defensively at shortstop filling in for an injured Alissa Dalton in April with a .956 fielding percentage (17 PO, 26 A, 2 E).
Kotzelnick and Quiñones are set to make their Ragin' Cajuns debut in the 2022 season after transferring from Pac-12 member Washington in July.
