Ragin’ Cajuns land a state-high three representatives on the 2020-21 All-Louisiana Volleyball Team
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball program placed a statewide-high three individuals on the 2020-21 Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) All-Louisiana Volleyball Team, highlighted by first team selections Hali Wisnoskie and Avery Breaux.
In addition to Wisnoskie and Breaux, junior outside hitter Kelsey Bennett was named to the second team.
The three All-Louisiana Volleyball selections mark the most for the Ragin' Cajuns since 2017, and the fourth time in the past five seasons the program has multiple honorees. Louisiana tied Tulane for the largest representation among the state's volleyball programs.
Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot, who retired as the Ragin' Cajuns' all-time winningest coach in April with 186 victories at the University, was selected as the co-Coach of the Year.
In Mazeitis-Fonetnot's final season leading the program, the Ragin' Cajuns (17-7, 11-5 Sun Belt) rolled out a double-digit win streak to start the season (second-best start ever at 11-0) and earned the program's first-ever ranking at 15th, nationally. Louisiana also recorded double-digit conference wins for a second straight season, which is the first such accomplishment in the Sun Belt era.
Wisnoskie, who last fall became only the second four-time, all-conference selection in the program's 45-year history joining UL Athletics Hall of Famer Nia Kiggundu, was awarded a spot on the All-Louisiana Volleyball First Team for the fourth consecutive season.
Breaux and Bennett – All-Sun Belt Conference honorees back in November – each received their first career All-Louisiana accolade. Breaux was the only setter named to the first team.
During the fall segment of the 2020-21 collegiate volleyball season, Wisnoskie posted a fourth consecutive 300-kills season (finished with 340 kills at a career-best rate of 3.9 per set), Breaux averaged a career-best 11.4 assists per set (totaled a nation-leading 887 assists), and Bennett posted a second consecutive 200-200 season of kills and digs in addition to leading Louisiana with 13 double-doubles.
Taylor Bannister (Louisiana State) was named Player of the Year, Haley Hoang (Northwestern State) was chosen Libero of the Year, Kailin Newsome (Southeastern Louisiana) was voted the Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year accolades went to Semira Blair (Xavier). Xavier head coach Pat Kendrick shared Coach of the Year accolades with Mazeitis-Fontenot.
