Louisiana set to host 54-hole event after 2020 tournament canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic
LAFAYETTE – After having its 2020 home tournament canceled just days after the collegiate athletics world came to a screeching halt due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team will host its first event in 748 days when the 36th annual Louisiana Classics tees off on Monday at Oakbourne Country Club.

The 54-hole event will begin on Monday with a 36-hole shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m., before concluding on Tuesday with the final 18 holes starting at 7:30 a.m. Live results will be available at RaginCajuns.com and GolfStat.com with live coverage on ESPN+ beginning at 9:30 a.m. for Tuesday's final round.

Admission is free with fans reminded to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Louisiana will host a star-studded field that features three teams ranked in the GolfStat Top 50 – five-time Louisiana Classics champion and No. 5-ranked Illinois, No. 38 North Texas and No. 49 Sam Houston – along with seven players ranked in the GolfStat Top-150.

Also joining Louisiana, Illinois, UNT and SHSU in the 14-team field includes Illinois State, Kansas City, ULM, defending champion McNeese, Michigan, Oral Roberts, Rice, Southern Illinois, Texas State and UTEP. UTSA, ranked No. 26 in the GolfStat rankings, will send a pair of individuals to compete on the par-72, 6,898-yard course.

The two-day event will feature some of the top collegiate golfers in the country with seven players ranked in the GolfStat Top-150 scheduled to play. Highlighting the field is Illinois' Michael Feagles, ranked No. 4 nationally, who will be joined by Fighting' Illini teammates Jerry Ji (No. 40), Adrien Dumont de Chassart (No. 45) and Tommy Kuhl (No. 79).

Three other golfers – Louisiana's Charlie Flynn (No. 108), William Holcomb of Sam Houston (No. 131) and ULM's Guillaume Fanonnel (No. 145) – are ranked among the GolfStat Top-150.

Flynn, who has posted a 71.56 scoring average in nine rounds of play during the 2020-21 season, will lead Louisiana's five-man lineup that includes Peter Hinnant (73.25), Hunter Hammett (73.56), Hudson Dubinski (71.83) and Bjorn Gudjonsson (75.56). Justin Caldwell, Cole Kendrick and freshman Jake Marler will compete for the Ragin' Cajuns as individuals.

McNeese became the fifth in-state program to win the Louisiana Classics (joining Louisiana, LSU, New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana) after posting a seven-stroke victory over Illinois in the 2019 event. UTSA, Kent State and Kansas City rounded out the top-five in the final standings with McNeese's Blake Elliott earning medalist honors after edging Illinois' Bryan Baumgarten and Collin Clark of UTSA by one shot.
