LAFAYETTE – The NCAA office announced its Public Recognition Awards on Tuesday, and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball program finished among the Top 10 percent of their sport based on the most recent Academic Progress Rates.
Louisiana Volleyball, led by head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot, was one of 91 out of the 332 (27 percent) women's volleyball programs nationwide to earn the distinction. This is the first time the program is named to the list.
At the conference level, Louisiana Volleyball was one of 31 Sun Belt Conference programs across all sports to be acknowledged. The Ragin' Cajuns and ULM were the league's lone two volleyball programs on the list.
"For our volleyball team to achieve at this level is incredible," said Louisiana's Assistant Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Academics Services Christy Alford. "It is a testament to the hard work and dedication our volleyball student-athletes demonstrate on a daily basis in balancing academics, athletics, and community service.
"Coach Mazeitis-Fontenot, her assistant coaches, and academic support staff continue to set the bar higher and higher and the team is rising to the challenge," Alford added. "Thank you to our coaches, athletics staff, faculty, and others who continue to support our student-athletes with outstanding educational, athletic, and professional development opportunities."
Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 academic years.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 19.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
