SETTING THE SCENE
Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball (14-5, 0-0 Sun Belt) gets its much-awaited opportunity to build upon a highly successful week-long stretch of Top 10 matchups, when the squad faces Coastal Carolina in the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Opening Series at St. John Stadium in Conway, S.C.

The series with the Chanticleers (12-5, 0-0 Sun Belt), a rematch of the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game, is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, March 6-8. The series opener is set for 3 p.m. (CST) on Friday, and will be followed by a 1 p.m. (CST) game on Saturday and 11 a.m. (CST) matchup on Sunday.

It's the first action of the week for the Ragin' Cajuns after Wednesday's scheduled midweek game with Campbell at Lamson Park was rained out.

The Ragin' Cajuns, ranked as high as No. 5 in the national polls, are coming off a 3-2 run through games with then-No. 3 Texas and No. 6 Florida, highlighted by a series win over UF in Gainesville.

With the rain out against Campbell, Louisiana is extending its stretch of consecutive road games to 14 straight. The squad's last home outing came on Feb. 15 vs. Louisiana State.

The Coastal Carolina series marks the start of the 20th season of regular season play in the Sun Belt Conference. The defending champion Ragin' Cajuns carry an active league winning streak of 30 games, which dates back to 2018, into the weekend. Last season, the squad went undefeated (25-0) in SBC action.

This is Louisiana's second trip to Conway for a meeting with the Chanticleers. The two programs opened SBC play at St. John Stadium during Gerry Glasco's inaugural campaign – the Ragin' Cajuns first-ever visit to the area.

Fans can listen to all three games of the series on SportsRadio ESPN 1420-AM in the Acadiana region and the ESPN 1420 mobile app worldwide. A live streak, through GoCCUSports.com, is being offered on Friday and Sunday only.

SERIES HISTORY (Louisiana leads, 10-1)
  • Series was initiated with Coastal Carolina's entry into the Sun Belt Conference, starting in the 2017 season.
  • First-ever matchup occurred April 29-30, 2017 at Lamson Park. Louisiana won all three games of the series by the run rule.
  • All three meetings in Conway, S.C., in Louisiana's visit during the 2018 season ended in a 4-2 score. The Ragin' Cajuns claimed 2-of-3 in that series, keeping alive its streak of consecutive Sun Belt series won.
  • The two teams are very familiar with each other, having faced off five times during the 2019 season. Louisiana swept the three-game set at Lamson Park, then won both the winner's bracket final and championship game matchup at the Sun Belt Tournament in San Marcos, Texas.

QUICK HITS
  • The Ragin' Cajuns own the nation's longest active streak of consecutive conference series won, having won 55 consecutive Sun Belt weekend series dating back to March 2013.
  • Louisiana has won every Sun Belt Conference series on its schedule each of the past six seasons (2014-19).
  • The matchup with Coastal Carolina marks the first of nine consecutive weekends of Sun Belt Conference series to finish off the 2020 regular season.
  • Louisiana enters the week only three wins shy of the program's 1,700 all-time win. The Ragin' Cajuns are the fifth-winningest program in NCAA Division I Softball history.
  • Louisiana owns five come-from-behind wins in the past two weeks, highlighted by a pair of four-run deficits overcome at then-No. 6 Florida.
  • For the season, six of the Ragin' Cajuns 14 wins have come when the opposition scored first (6-5 mark).
  • Raina O'Neal was the latest Ragin' Cajun honored by the Sun Belt Conference, earning Player of the Week accolades after her critical hits led to the comeback that led Louisiana to the series win at Florida.
  • Ranked as high as No. 5 in the Softball America poll, it's the highest regular season ranking for Louisiana since reaching the No. 5 spot in the 2016 NFCA and USA Softball polls.
  • With her exclamation point home run on Sunday at Florida, Carrie Boswell became the 10th different Ragin' Cajun with a home run this season.
  • Bailey Curry became the fifth Ragin' Cajun to hit multiple home runs in the season's first month when she homered in both games of the Texas doubleheader. Curry's Game 1 blast provided the winning runs as Megan Kleist out-dueled Miranda Elish.
  • The Ragin' Cajuns can cause havoc at any part of the lineup. There are 11 different individuals who have already amassed multiple RBI.
  • For the season, the Ragin' Cajuns are 5-4 vs. ranked opponents. The squad owns splits against Louisiana State, Oklahoma State and Texas, and a series win over Florida.
  • Dating back to the 2019 season, in which she led the nation in victories (with a 39-6 mark), Summer Ellyson sports a 48-7 record with a 1.25 ERA over her past 62 appearances.
  • A mere two weeks into his third season as a collegiate head coach, Gerry Glasco collected his 100th career win overall and with Louisiana. The milestone triumph came Feb. 15 vs. Louisiana State at Lamson Park. Glasco's career marks stands at 107-27.
