Ragin’ Cajuns will face Little Rock in the Quarterfinals on Wednesday night
LAFAYETTE – Powered by a dominant first quarter and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, Louisiana picked up an impressive 81-64 victory over Georgia Southern in the First Round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Tuesday night.

Now 9-7 in the league's postseason tournament under head coach Garry Brodhead, the Ragin' Cajuns (18-12, 10-8 SBC) will face Little Rock in the quarterfinals with a chance to face off with No. 1 Troy in the Smoothie King Center. The quarterfinal contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in the Cajundome.

The opening-round win improved Louisiana to 7-0 all-time over Georgia Southern in Lafayette and 2-0 over the Eagles in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Louisiana was in complete control of the contest, leading for 38:01 on Tuesday behind a 45.3 percent (24-for-53) shooting performance from the floor. The team also controlled the boards all night and finished with a 39-31 edge on the glass, improving it to 12-1 when outrebounding its opponents.

Junior Jomyra Mathis stole the show, recording her second 18-point performance against Georgia Southern this season on a 6-for-11 shooting night. She also made six of seven free throws attempts, helping her team go 27-for-33 from the charity stripe.

Brandi Williams (16), Andrea Cournoyer (11) and Skyler Goodwin (10) all scored in double figures against the Eagles, while newly named Second Team All-Conference performer Ty'Reona Doucet led the team with a game-high 12 rebounds to accompany seven points.

It was all Louisiana in the first quarter, which shot 66.7 percent (10-for-15) from the field and 50.0 percent (3-for-6) from deep in the opening 10 minutes to go ahead 27-15 following a jumper in the paint from Mathis, two of her eight points in the period.

The hot play continued into the second quarter when Williams drained one of her two treys to push the lead to 37-20 with 6:58 on the clock. Senior Kendall Bess, who finished the night with seven points, made two free throws with 3:16 in the half to push the lead even higher to 42-23 before settling on a 44-28 score at the break.

It was smooth sailing throughout the third quarter for Louisiana, which eventually went ahead 61-40 with just over a minute to play. However, a series of foul shots from Georgia Southern in a 26-second span saw the lead dwindle down to 61-48.

There were plenty of tense moments in the fourth stanza; as the Eagles continued to push, but they were unable to pull within single digits. Tatum Barber's layup with 3:08 to play was as close as Georgia Southern would get as Louisiana went on to make 10 free throws in the final 1:44 to advance to the quarterfinals.
