SETTING THE SCENE
The second week of the young 2020 season begins for No. 8 Louisiana Softball on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in a 6 p.m. contest with Lamar at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.

The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off a 3-1 mark in the season-opening Louisiana Classics tournament held at Lamson Park. The squad surrendered no more than one earned run in any contest and the lone loss coming on a seventh-inning home run in a pitcher's duel with North Texas.

Tuesday's contest is the start of a busy week for Louisiana which is scheduled to play five games, capped off by a home-and-home with fellow nationally ranked foe Louisiana State.

It's the first meeting between the Ragin' Cajuns and Cardinals since a March 2014 contest held at Lamson Park. It's also the lone matchup scheduled for this season.

SERIES HISTORY (Louisiana leads, 18-0)
  • Series originated in the 1980s when both programs were members of the Southland Conference (1983-87).
  • All but one of the previous 18 meetings took place in the Southland era; series resumed March 6, 2014 at Lamson Park.

QUICK HITS
  • The offense produced a .308 average, had four individuals hit above .400, and launched four home runs during Opening Weekend. Julie Rawls led the way with a .444 average and seven RBI.
  • Summer Ellyson and Megan Kleist combined for 39 strikeouts and yielded just six walks in 23-2/3 innings pitched on Opening Weekend.
  • In addition to Megan Kleist, also their Ragin' Cajuns debut on Opening Weekend were transfers Kaitlyn Alderink (Texas A&M), Melissa Mayeux (Miami Dade College) and Geana Torres (Missouri), along with freshmen Taylor Roman, Sydnee Hebert and Kylie Neel.
  • Perhaps the feel-good story of the start of the season was infielder Brittany Holland, who suffered season-ending knee injuries each of the previous two seasons, return to the field at third base and close out the weekend with a grand slam vs. UTSA.
  • Kaitlyn Alderink showed she could be the next "go-to" base stealer, swiping three bags all on Opening Day.
  • In her first official appearance as a Ragin' Cajun, and first action since the 2018 season, Megan Kleist collected a save (Ball State) and win (UTSA). The next day she fired off 11 strikeouts vs. North Texas.
  • Summer Ellyson showed early glimpses of the dominance she's shown the previous two seasons, carrying a perfect game into the fifth inning of Saturday's game with UTSA.
  • The battle for third base heated up on Opening Weekend as both Brittany Holland and Melissa Mayeux displayed explosiveness with their bat, each hitting a home run.
  • Louisiana utilized four different lineups on opening weekend, a credit to the depth inside the team's dugout.
  • The three wins in the Louisiana Classics increased Gerry Glasco's overall win total as a head coach and at Louisiana to 96, giving him an opportunity to reach 100 before the season-opening homestand expires.
  • The Ragin' Cajuns were preseason ranked in the Top 10 for the sixth time since 2000. Starting off at No. 8 in the D1Softball and Softball America polls, it's was the program's highest preseason nod since 2009.
  • Louisiana is in the midst of the 40th season in program history, one founded by NFCA Hall of Famer Yvette Girouard back in 1981. At 1,686 all-time wins, Louisiana ranks No. 5 among all-time NCAA D1 Softball's winningest programs.
  • A new upgrade is up and running beyond the right field wall at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park, as a state-of-the-art video board system made its debut during Opening Weekend. Fans are now able to enjoy team introduction videos, replays, higher-quality graphics and much more.
