Ragin’ Cajuns will wear “Looney” across the back of their jerseys to honor Birmingham native and former coach

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Football will honor late assistant coach and Birmingham native D.J. Looney during its game at UAB on Oct. 23 by wearing "Looney" across the back of its game jerseys.

Looney, who tragically passed away on Aug. 1 following a heart attack during a team workout, was entering his third season with the Ragin' Cajuns Football program, working primarily with the offensive line.

He began his playing career in Birmingham as a prep standout at Oak Mountain High School, where he earned All-State honors in his final two seasons and was rated as the No. 11 center in the nation. He went on to play college football at Mississippi State from 2007-10.

Following his collegiate career, he joined the Bulldogs' staff as a graduate assistant for the 2011 season before stops at East Mississippi Community College (2012-13), Central Arkansas (2014-16) and Georgia (2016).

Looney then returned to his alma mater as the tight ends coach in 2017 before joining head coach Billy Napier's staff ahead of the 2018 campaign.

Louisiana and UAB are set to kick off at Legion Field at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
