Sun Belt series continues at 6 p.m. Friday evening at Earl K. Long Gym
LAFAYETTE – No. 15 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball had its season-opening 11-match win streak snapped, and its debut as a ranked team spoiled, on Friday morning at Earl K. Long Gym as Texas State claimed a 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-14) win in the opening contest of a three-match Sun Belt series.
With the loss, the 2020 Ragin' Cajuns settle for the second-best start in program history. The squad's remarkable opening-season run is second only to the program-record 13 consecutive wins recorded by the 1990 team.
Texas State (9-1, 4-0 Sun Belt) held the edge offensively throughout the contest, finishing with a 48-28 advantage in kills while firing off a .372 hitting percentage. The Ragin' Cajuns (11-1, 5-1 Sun Belt) weren't able to get their offense unwound, limited to a season-low .115 hitting percentage, and could only muster nine digs per set.
The Bobcats reeled off a pair of 5-0 scoring runs early in the first set to break away from a 4-all tie. With the first run the visitors lead quickly grew to 9-4, then the latter scoring spree advanced the score to 15-6 and Louisiana couldn't recover.
Sparked by four kills off of the bench from Desiree Johnson, the Ragin' Cajuns were in a see-saw battle in the second set. The two teams played through 12 ties, the last one coming at 20-20, before Texas State fired off five kills down the stretch to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
The Bobcats secured the last stanza by breaking free from a 3-all tie with an eight-point run.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Kara Barnes scored a team-leading 11 kills for her sixth match of the season with double digits. Hali Wisnoskie supplied eight kills off of her 30 attempts.
Barnes pushed her season total past 100 kills, hitting the mark for the first time in her collegiate career. For Wisnoskie, she increased her career total past 1,200 (now at 1,201 career kills).
Johnson was extremely efficient in the second set, garnering the four kills off the exact amount of swings.
At the net it was Tia Jade Smith's four blocks and Kelsey Bennett's three blocks leading the way. On the back row, Hannah Ramirez collected 11 digs to extend her streak of consecutive matches with double digits to 24 straight dating back to last Oct. 11.
Avery Breaux handed out 21 assists and surpassed five digs for the 13th time in as many matches by recording eight digs. Breaux increased her career digs total to 995, inching her closer to hitting the 1,000-dig mark in her career.
