Junior pitcher crafted 39 wins during Louisiana's first 50-win season since 2012
LAFAYETTE – Summer Ellyson, who attained All-American status following a 30-win season, has officially been named the 2019 NCAA Softball statistical champion for victories.
Â
She is the first Ragin' Cajuns pitcher to lead the nation in victories since Brooke Mitchell recorded the program-record 45 wins in 2004.
Â
Ellyson's rise to the top of the victories chart began on March 24 at South Alabama when, with a 17-4 mark, she began a string of 22 consecutive triumphs.
Â
From the final weekend of March through regular season's end, she was exceptionally dominant in leading Louisiana to the Sun Belt Championship and a consistent spot in the nation's Top 10: sported a 16-0 mark with a 0.43 ERA, recorded two saves, yielded only six earned runs and 48 hits over 98.1 innings pitched and struck out 150.
Â
The Lafayette native is the first Ragin' Cajun to reach 30 wins since Jordan Wallace in 2013.
Â
Along the way, she sprinted out to an 8-0 start during the season-opening, 14-game win streak, claimed all three wins of a Sun Belt series four times, including matchups with top contenders Texas State and Troy, claimed 20 of the 25 wins in the undefeated Sun Belt Conference run and was the only pitcher in the nation to surpass 30 wins in the regular season.
Â
Ellyson, who posted a 1.11 ERA and 354 strikeouts to go with her impressive win total, was the recipient of a Sun Belt-high seven Pitcher of the Week awards, represented Louisiana on the NFCA All-America Team and warded Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year and Louisiana Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Year honors.
