Cajuns look for first SBC title since 2007; paired with Texas State, UTA in opening round

MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team will look to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals beginning Sunday when it opens play in the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Raven Golf Club at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

First-round action on the par-71, 6,767-yard course begins at 7:30 a.m. Louisiana, which will be paired with Texas State and UT Arlington in the opening round, will tee off beginning at 8:15 a.m., from the No. 10 tee.

Second- and third-round action will begin on Monday and Tuesday at 7:30 a.m., with the top four teams in the standings advancing to Wednesday's match play format.

Live results of the 54-hole event will be available at GolfStat.com, with all three rounds, featuring live video from holes 1, 9, 10 and 18, being broadcast live on ESPN+.

Louisiana, which finished seventh overall at last year's event, looks to finish in the top four for the first time since the format was introduced in 2016 while earning its fourth overall SBC crown and first since 2007. The Ragin' Cajuns wrapped up play last week at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship finishing 10th overall in the 15-team field, closing out the 54-hole tournament as one of four teams to post a final round under par.

"We're very excited and anxious to start our conference championship, as well as have a lot of confidence in our team," head coach Theo Sliman said. "We have seen a lot from this team as individuals throughout the year with highs and lows.

"The beautiful thing about post-season play is all of that is erased and we have an opportunity to compete for a conference championship. In order for that to happen, we need to take it one day at a time and get a complete group effort from the entire line up."

Freshman Charlie Flynn will secure the No. 1 spot in the lineup for Louisiana after ranking third among all Sun Belt Conference freshman in scoring average (73.43) and among the overall league leaders in rounds played (30).

Micah Goulas, ranked No. 32 in the SBC in scoring average (73.81), will start in the No. 2 position for the Ragin' Cajuns in his SBC Championship debut with returning participants Peter Hinnant (74.17) and Jack Tolson (74.42) filling the third and fourth spots in the lineup.

Freshman Hudson Dubinski (75.76), who carded a career-low 3-under-par 69 to open play last week at Old Waverly, fills out the lineup for the Ragin' Cajuns.

Coastal Carolina's Morgan Deneen was the individual medalist in 2018, winning the title at 10-under with a Sun Belt all-time low, three-round 203. Deneen joined the Chanticleer golf team in August of 2018 as a walk-on and claimed the title in his first Sun Belt Conference Championship.

Arkansas State holds the lowest scoring average in the Sun Belt at 285.44 and is the highest ranked team in the league, coming in at No. 31 overall in the GolfStat.com rankings. Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern are ranked Nos. 66 and 67, respectively.

Coastal Carolina won last year's match play title defeating the Eagles, 4-1.
