SETTING THE SCENE
10th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball is set to enjoy a weekend at home for the first time in over a month as Troy visits Lamson Park.

It's the Sun Belt Conference home opener for Louisiana (20-3, 3-0 Sun Belt) and the Alumni Reunion Series. The Ragin' Cajuns and Trojans (18-9, 2-1 Sun Belt) are set to meet Friday-Sunday, March 15-17.

The Ragin' Cajuns last weekend event at Lamson Park was Feb. 15-17 when the squad hosted the Louisiana Classics. Louisiana sports a perfect 12-0 mark in the friendly confines this season.

The weekend series features two of the Sun Belt Conference preseason favorites, with Louisiana picked first and Troy third in the preseason coaches poll. The matchup features a pair of pitching staffs and defenses that are ranked inside the Top 5 of the SBC.

Louisiana enters Week 2 of league action riding a five-game winning streak which began with a road sweep of defending champion Texas State last weekend in San Marcos, Texas.

Louisiana has an active streak of 47 consecutive Sun Belt Conference series won (school and SBC record streak). The streak spans the previous five-plus seasons, dating back to a March 2013 sweep of FIU.

SERIES HISTORY (Louisiana leads, 36-6)
  • Ragin' Cajuns and Trojans are meeting in their 14th Sun Belt series since Troy joined the league in 2006. Louisiana claimed the series victory each of the previous 13 occurrences.
  • Louisiana holds a 19-2 edge in meetings played at Lamson Park. Dating back to the 2015 series, the Ragin' Cajuns have won the last five matchups in the facility.
  • Two programs first met in a doubleheader at Lamson Park on April 18, 1997, but not again until Troy joined the Sun Belt (2006).

A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Infield: Louisiana is anchored on the left side by two of the best infielders in the country in senior third baseman Kara Gremillion and junior shortstop Alissa Dalton – both career .950-plus fielders. Returning starting second baseman Casidy Chaumont has resumed her spot with Keeli Milligan sliding in occasionally depending upon matchups. At first base, returning starter Kourtney Gremillion and Toledo transfer Bailey Curry rotate at the position.

Outfield: Expected to make a significant impact are Texas A&M transfers Keeli Milligan (left field) and Sarah Hudek (right field). Texas Tech transfer Raina O'Neal, who sat out due to transfer rules in 2018, is making her Louisiana debut in center field. Aeriyl Mass provides a boost with her speed and should see time in various outfield positions as a defensive replacement. Jolie Readeaux and Julie Rawls could see time in the outfield depending on matchups.

Pitchers: Preseason Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Summer Ellyson is back as Louisiana's lead pitcher. Ellyson was a 20-game winner and ranked Top 40 nationally in all major pitching categories in 2018. Sophomore Carrie Boswell and freshman Kandra Lamb of Australia have been the first out of the bullpen and starters when Ellyson rests. Fifth-year senior Alison Deville and sophomore Casey Dixon add additional depth behind Ellyson.

Catchers: Senior Lexie Comeaux and Northwestern State transfer Julie Rawls, converted to the position from the outfield, serve as the Ragin' Cajuns' main catchers. Comeaux fills the designated player role, and plays in the outfield, in order to keep her bat in the game, as Rawls has seen plenty playing time early in order to continue her development.

NOTABLE STREAKS AND TRENDS
  • The 2019 season marks the 39th season overall in Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball history and the second season of the Gerry Glasco era.
  • Louisiana's season-opening, 14-game winning streak marked the program's best start since the 2015 season, matching that team's start.
  • The Ragin' Cajuns sweep at Texas State during Sun Belt Opening Weekend marked the program's first sweep in San Marcos since the Bobcats joined the league in 2014.
  • In Louisiana's games with Baylor and Nicholls earlier this week, Summer Ellyson piled up 28 strikeouts over 13 innings pitched. She fanned a season-high 17 in the 4-1 win over Baylor.
  • Summer Ellyson has steered Louisiana's efforts in the pitching circle collecting 14 victories over the first five weeks (14-3, 1.25 ERA). She ranks second nationally in the category trailing only Indiana's Tara Trainer (16 wins).
  • Julie Rawls has raised her average 80 points since March 1. Now hitting a team-best .431 for the season, Rawls is batting .643 (9-for-14) with eight RBI since the start of the month.
  • Kourtney Gremillion has posted at least one RBI each of the past four games. She has generated seven RBI during the stretch.
  • The Ragin' Cajuns boast one of the nation's top offenses, ranking Top 25 nationally in seven different categories. There are five players with 20-plus hits, seven with multiple home runs, eight with double-digit RBI and nine hitting above .300.
  • Louisiana has launched 28 home runs over the first 23 games, representing a strong start to the expected exponential rise in power numbers from a year ago (23 HR in 57 games in 2018).
  • The Ragin' Cajuns have been active on the base path, swiping 87 stolen bases in 96 attempts. Keeli Milligan leads the charge with 30 stolen bases in as many attempts putting her on pace to challenge the school's single-season record (51 by Dorsey Steamer in 1992).
  • Bailey Curry has carried a .400-plus average since opening weekend and has reached base in 37 of 68 plate appearances. She leads the team with 13 walks and a .544 on base percentage.
  • Summer Ellyson is the reigning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week. During Opening Weekend, she earned all three wins over Texas State and exited the series with a streak of 12-2/3 consecutive scoreless innings pitched.
  • Since the Texas State series, Summer Ellyson has surrendered only two runs and 12 hits over the last 27-2/3 innings she's pitched. She is 5-0 with a 0.51 ERA and .126 opponents average during the stretch.
  • The Ragin' Cajuns have started fast in 2019, scoring in the first inning 11 times and being the first to light up the scoreboard in 16 of 23 outings.
