SETTING THE SCENE
No. 10 Louisiana Softball faces its first road test of the 2019 season in Waco, Texas when the Ragin' Cajuns participate in the Baylor Invitational Friday-Sunday, Feb. 22-24 at Getterman Stadium.

One of nine undefeated teams entering Week 3 of the season, Louisiana (11-0) meets No. 21 Baylor, Kent State and North Texas in the tournament.

The Ragin' Cajuns open play in Waco on Friday facing Kent State at 12:30 p.m. and Baylor at 5:30 p.m., then wrap up round robin play on Saturday with North Texas at 10 a.m. Bracket play begins Saturday afternoon with matchups determined by round robin results.

Louisiana recently completed an 11-game, season-opening homestand in which the squad was sound in all three phases of the game: the offense hit .370, the pitching staff turned in a 0.73 ERA and the defense fielded .979.

The trip to Waco marks the first of back-to-back opportunities for the Ragin' Cajuns to experience an NCAA Regional-type  atmosphere – preceding a trip to Oklahoma the first weekend in March – and gain postseason resume style points.

The Ragin' Cajuns get a chance to continue their regional rivalry with Baylor, having met at least once each season since 2014, while facing former Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas.

Off to the program's best start since the 2015 season, Louisiana ranks Top 10 nationally in scoring, average, slugging percentage and on base percentage. Preseason Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Summer Ellyson (7-0, 0.67 ERA), the nation's leader in victories, sets the tone in the circle.

A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Infield: Louisiana is anchored on the left side by two of the best infielders in the country in senior third baseman Kara Gremillion and junior shortstop Alissa Dalton – both career .950-plus fielders. Returning starting second baseman Casidy Chaumont is joined at the position by Jolie Readeaux. At first base, returning starter Kourtney Gremillion and Toledo transfer Bailey Curry are expected to split time.

Outfield: Expected to make a significant impact are Texas A&M transfers Keeli Milligan (left field) and Sarah Hudek (right field). Texas Tech transfer Raina O'Neal, who sat out due to transfer rules in 2018, is making her Louisiana debut in center field. Aeriyl Mass will provide a boost with her speed and should see time in various outfield positions. Jolie Readeaux and Julie Rawls could see time in the outfield depending on matchups.

Pitchers: Preseason Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Summer Ellyson is back as Louisiana's lead pitcher. Ellyson was a 20-game winner and ranked Top 40 nationally in all major pitching categories in 2018. Sophomores Casey Dixon and Carrie Boswell, along with freshman Kandra Lamb of Australia and fifth-year senior Alison Deville add depth behind Ellyson.

Catchers: Senior Lexie Comeaux and Northwestern State transfer Julie Rawls, converted to the position from the outfield, will serve as the Ragin' Cajuns' main catchers. Comeaux is also expected to see time at designated player, first base and in the outfield in order to keep her bat in the game, as Rawls will see plenty playing time early in order to continue her development.

NOTABLE STREAKS AND TRENDS
  • The 2019 season marks the 39th season overall in Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball history and the second season of the Gerry Glasco era.
  • At 11-0, the Ragin' Cajuns are off to their best start in Gerry Glasco's tenure. It's the program's best start since 2015 (began 14-0).
  • Louisiana has launched 15 home runs through the first two weekends – a strong start to the expected exponential rise in power numbers from a year ago (hit 23 HR in 57 games in 2018). The Ragin' Cajuns belted a season-high four homers in Sunday's Louisiana Classics championship game vs. SFA.
  • The Ragin' Cajuns offense ranks Top 10 nationally in average, scoring, slugging percentage and on base percentage. The squad's 15 home runs are tied for the 12th-most hit.
  • Louisiana has turned the wheels on the base path, swiping 46 stolen bases (in 51 attempts) over the first two weekends. Keeli Milligan (15-for-15) and Kara Gremillion (12-for-13) have been the catalysts behind the fast start.
  • Summer Ellyson recorded five victories, including both in a doubleheader sweep of Pac-12 foe California, during 30-2/3 innings of work last week. Her Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week performance saw her yield only four earned runs and 16 hits while striking out 24.
  • In all complete-game efforts of seven innings this season, Summer Ellyson has needed less than 100 pitches to net the result.
  • From top to bottom in the lineup, Louisiana provides a formidable challenge for opposing pitchers. Presently, there are eight different hitters with at least one home run and seven RBI.
  • Lexie Comeaux was the Ragin' Cajuns hottest hitter April 1 through season's end in 2018 (.357, 11 extra base hits, 19 RBI, .560 SLG%). She's picked up right where she left off, starting the 2019 season with a .440 average, four home runs, 10 RBI and a 1.080 slugging percentage.
  • Alissa Dalton leads a group of six Ragin' Cajuns who have already hit double digits in RBI, tallying a team-best 13 RBI.
  • Carrie Boswell has delivered three scoreless relief efforts in the circle. The first one out of the bullpen over the first two weekends, Boswell locked down the Louisiana Classics title by retiring 10 of the final 11 batters faced in a 3-2/3 innings effort vs. SFA.
  • The Baylor Invitational marks the beginning of a 12-game road trip for No. 10 Louisiana which runs through the Sun Belt Conference opening series March 8-10 at Texas State.
  • The 10th-ranked Ragin' Cajuns and No. 21 Baylor are scheduled to meet once again after this weekend, with the Bears visiting Lamson Park for a single game on March 11.

UP NEXT
No. 10 Louisiana remains on the road traveling to Norman, Okla., next weekend for the Oklahoma Courtyard Marriott Tournament March 1-3 hosted by the fourth-ranked Sooners at Marita Hynes Field.

The Ragin' Cajuns, Oklahoma and Oregon State are participating in a true round robin, facing each other twice throughout the weekend. The showdown with the Sooners takes place Friday evening (6 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.).
