Cajuns struggle on back nine after challenging for early lead

HUMBLE, Texas – Louisiana's Peter Hinnant fired a 2-under par 70 and the Ragin' Cajuns golf team got off to a hot start before problems on the back nine resulted in a 6-over-par 294 during the first day of the All-American Intercollegiate on Sunday at the Golf Club of Houston.

Second-round play on the par-72, 7,067-yard course will begin on Monday at 8 a.m. Louisiana, which finished ninth overall after the first day of the 54-hole tournament, will tee off at 8 a.m., and will be paired with Ole Miss and South Carolina. Live results will be available at RaginCajuns.com.

"Today was a flip-flop, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type of day," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Very proud of the fast start that the team got off to. We were leading after nine holes and let the lead slip away rather quickly. We look forward to tomorrow's challenge and applying lessons learned from today as well as last week. This very well could be another rain-shortened event and we have an opportunity to move up the leaderboard and post a solid round tomorrow."

Hinnant opened with birdies on three of his first four holes before adding a birdie on the par-5, 560-yard No. 8 to record a 4-under 32 on the front nine. A pair of bogeys at No. 11 and 13 dropped Hinnant in the standings, but the sophomore would reach par on his final five holes to finish the first day two strokes behind first-day leader Mark Reppe of Baylor.

Charlie Flynn fired a 2-over-par 74 for Louisiana with Micah Goulas (35-40-75) and Bjorn Gudjonsson (36-39-75) finishing at 3-over. Jack Tolson (38-38) posted a 4-over 76 for the Ragin' Cajuns while Hudson Dubinski, competing as an individual, finished at 7-over 79.

Louisiana cruised through the front nine, recording 14 birdies from its five-man lineup and posting a team score of 7-under to sit near the top of the leaderboard. But the back nine was a different story as the Ragin' Cajuns carded a pair of birdies with 11 bogeys, a double bogey and triple bogey.

Sam Houston State posted a first-round score of 5-under 283 to hold the lead after the first day with Baylor one shot back at 284. Houston (286), UTSA (287) and Charlotte (287) rounded out the top five in the 14-team field with Rice (292), South Carolina (292), Ole Miss (293) and Louisiana following.
