Â
Louisiana opened the 2019 season, the second campaign under Gerry Glasco's guidance, last weekend with dominant pitching performances and powerful swings in outscoring foes 65-4 in the Ragin' Cajuns Classic at Lamson Park.
Â
That performance resulted in a jump in the national polls, with the Ragin' Cajuns vaulting to No. 13 in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 rankings.
Â
Louisiana seeks to build upon its offensive explosion from Opening Weekend in which seven different players contributed at least one home run, led by three from Lexie Comeaux and two from Raina O'Neal, as the next two weekends provide stern tests at Baylor and Oklahoma.
Â
Summer Ellyson (four victories) and Kandra Lamb (two no-hitters) starred in the pitching circle last weekend. The other members of the pitching staff are expected to see work in the circle this weekend.
Â
A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Infield: Louisiana is anchored on the left side by two of the best infielders in the country in senior third baseman Kara Gremillion and junior shortstop Alissa Dalton – both career .950-plus fielders. Returning starting second baseman Casidy Chaumont is joined at the position by Jolie Readeaux. At first base, returning starter Kourtney Gremillion and Toledo transfer Bailey Curry are expected to split time.
Â
Outfield: Expected to make a significant impact are Texas A&M transfers Keeli Milligan (left field) and Sarah Hudek (right field). Texas Tech transfer Raina O'Neal, who sat out due to transfer rules in 2018, is making her Louisiana debut in center field. Aeriyl Mass will provide a boost with her speed and should see time in various outfield positions. Jolie Readeaux and Julie Rawls could see time in the outfield depending on matchups.
Â
Pitchers: Preseason Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Summer Ellyson is back as Louisiana's lead pitcher. Ellyson was a 20-game winner and ranked Top 40 nationally in all major pitching categories in 2018. Sophomores Casey Dixon and Carrie Boswell, along with freshman Kandra Lamb of Australia and fifth-year senior Alison Deville add depth behind Ellyson.
Â
Catchers: Senior Lexie Comeaux and Northwestern State transfer Julie Rawls, converted to the position from the outfield, will serve as the Ragin' Cajuns' main catchers. Comeaux is also expected to see time at designated player, first base and in the outfield in order to keep her bat in the game, as Rawls will see plenty playing time early in order to continue her development.

NOTABLE STREAKS AND TRENDS
- The 2019 season marks the 39th season overall in Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball history and the second season of the Gerry Glasco era.
- At 6-0, the Ragin' Cajuns have matched their start from Gerry Glasco's inaugural campaign.
- Louisiana launched 10 home runs during Opening Weekend – a strong start to the expected exponential rise in power numbers from a year ago (hit 23 home runs in 57 games in 2018).
- The 65 runs produced by the Ragin' Cajuns offense marked the most scored on Opening Weekend since the 2011 season (scored 80 in 25th Louisiana Classics).
- Following Week 1 action, Louisiana ranked Top 10 nationally in batting average, home runs per game, on base percentage, scoring, slugging percentage and stolen bases per game.
- Raina O'Neal earned Sun Belt Player of the Week honors after tallying 12 hits on a .632 average and driving home nine runs during Opening Weekend. O'Neal entered the week ranked second in hits and third in total bases in the national rankings.
- Kandra Lamb had a collegiate debut to remember, tossing a pair of no-hitters leading her to Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors. In matchups with Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, she faced only three batters over the minimum and struck out 16.
- Summer Ellyson picked up where she left off in 2018, returning dominant in the circle once more. She debuted with 16 strikeouts vs. six-time defending Atlantic 10 champion Fordham and pitching all 14 innings in claiming a pair of wins over Pac-12 foe Cal in Monday's doubleheader.
- Lexie Comeaux was the Ragin' Cajuns hottest hitter April 1 through season's end in the 2018 season. She still owns the title after one week in 2019 after hitting .462 with three home runs and eight RBI against no strikeouts in 17 plate appearances.
- From top to bottom in the lineup, Louisiana provides a formidable challenge for opposing pitchers. Presently, there are seven different hitters with at least one home run and six RBI.
- Not only will Louisiana challenge foes with its power, but speed will play a factor as well. Led by a 7-for-7 showing from Keeli Milligan and 6-for-6 performance by Kara Gremillion the Ragin' Cajuns swiped 23 stolen bases (in 26 attempts) during Opening Weekend.
- The two no-hitters tossed by Kandra Lamb in the Ragin' Cajuns Classic marked the first time since the 2011 season that Louisiana had two no-hitters in the same weekend. In 2011, Christina Hamilton and Shelbee Rodgers pitched perfect games vs. Rhode Island on Opening Day.
- The Ragin' Cajuns Classic marked the debut in a Louisiana uniform for the highly touted list of transfers Gerry Glasco assembled in the offseason. Seeing action in a Ragin' Cajuns uniform for the first time was: Bailey Curry (Toledo), Sarah Hudek (Texas A&M), Julie Rawls (Northwestern State) and Keeli Milligan (Texas A&M).
- Raina O'Neal, who sat out last season after transferring from Texas Tech, also had the chance to wear the Ragin' Cajuns uniform for the first time. O'Neal, who blasted 12 homers as a freshman at Texas Tech, showed she'll be a showpiece in Louisiana's offense this season.
