Shreveport native recorded five top-5 finishes on 2019 Junior circuit

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Golf coach Theo Sliman announced on Friday that Shreveport, La., native Jake Marler signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the Ragin' Cajuns beginning in the 2020-21 season.

Marler, the first signee for the Ragin' Cajuns for the 2020-21 campaign, was rated as the No. 2 junior golfer in the state of Louisiana while recording five top-5 finishes on the junior circuit in 2019.

"We are extremely excited to announce the addition of Jake Marler to the Ragin' Cajun Golf Family," Sliman said. "In addition to being a talented and powerful golfer, Jake brings tremendous moral character along with a fierce competitiveness that will be a great addition to our program. We have thoroughly enjoyed the recruitment process and new at a very early stage that Jake would make a great Ragin' Cajun."

Marler finished third overall at the 2019 LGA Junior Amateur Championship in July after posting rounds of 67 and 68. He placed third at the AJGA Junior Championship in early June and was fourth a week later at the 47th annual Southern Junior Championship.

Marler helped Shreveport's C.E. Byrd High School, the same school that produced current Ragin' Cajuns sophomore Charlie Flynn, to the LHSAA Division I state title for the fifth time in the past six years. He placed third overall in the field for the second consecutive year at the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA State Golf Championships after posting a 3-under par 141.

"I'm very excited for the opportunity to join the UL Golf team … it's going to be a very fun four years," Marler said. "The team seems like one big family and they all seem to push each other to get better and everyone has each other's back.

"Coach Theo (Sliman) is awesome. He played a big role in why I made the decision to go to Louisiana. He really made me feel at home and he coached the team really well. I'm excited to attend the University of Louisiana and I most likely will major in business. The education also played a big role and I think they do a great job helping the athletes with all of their academics."
