Lafayette native elects to play for her hometown team
LAFAYETTE – Lafayette Christian Academy product Tamera Johnson has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play for the Louisiana Women's Basketball program in 2020-21, head coach Garry Brodhead announced on Wednesday.
Johnson, a 5'11 guard from Lafayette, will bring in a wealth of experience to the squad having played in two state title games during her high school career and earning multiple postseason awards.
"We are extremely excited about Tamera Johnson and the work ethic she will bring next season to our Ragin' Cajun family," Brodhead said. "She has all the qualities we look for in a student-athlete, including her ability to rebound and as well as being able to guard anyone on the floor. I feel she is a perfect fit for our offensive and defensive system."
As a freshman at Northside High School, she played her way to Honorable Mention honors and helped her team to a runner-up finish in the state championship game.
After sitting out her sophomore season following a transfer to LCA, Johnson quickly proved to be a difference maker on the squad, averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds per contest. Her efforts helped the Knights win their third consecutive state title.
As a result of her stellar play as a junior, she was named Second Team All-State, First Team All-Acadiana and First Team All-District.
Louisiana returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 14, when it welcomes McNeese State to the Cajundome for a 6 p.m. tip on ESPN+. The contest will be Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day. Faculty and staff can show their Cajun Card at the Cajundome box office to receive a free ticket to the game and purchase more at a discounted rate.
