UTA Slips by Louisiana Volleyball in Action-Packed Affair at E.K. Long Gym

Neither team could break free from the grasp of the opposition, Mavericks had the final key rally

LAFAYETTE – In a night of trading blows back-and-forth it was UT Arlington which had one final critical pushback in five-set classic with Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball at Earl K. Long Gym.

The Mavericks (14-10, 6-6 Sun Belt), who had lost a 5-0 lead in the decisive frame and fell behind 9-7, recovered thanks to three straight kills by Madison Hill which jumpstarted a 7-1 run that sent the visitors on to the 3-2 match win (21-25, 25-19, 27-29, 25-20, 15-11).

The Ragin' Cajuns (9-15, 5-6 Sun Belt) stormed back in the third set after trailing 9-2, and later 16-8, to forge a 20-all tie. The hosts, who had a chance to wrap up the match if they would have completed the rally, were left wondering what might have been had it not been for a five-point spurt by UTA that sent the contest into the winner-take-all scenario.

The loss snapped Louisiana's four-match winning streak and the squad's hold on second place in the Sun Belt West Division.

Defense proved to be the difference maker for the Mavericks who out-blocked the Ragin' Cajuns 14.0-8.0 and out-dug them 100-91. The two teams got after each other, limiting the opposition to a sub-.200 hitting percentage (UTA – .189; Louisiana – .149).

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Hali Wisnoskie had the lion-share of the Ragin' Cajuns attack attempts, firing off 71 which resulted in her scoring a season-high tying 18 kills. The production pushed the Columbus, Texas, career kills total past the 900-mark (now at 904).

Wisnoskie added 15 digs to her stat line, joining fellow outside hitter Kelsey Bennett, who scored 16 kills and scooped a team-best 21 digs, in recording a double-double. Bennett had the kill which drew a 27-all tie in the third set, leading to Louisiana's win in extra points which could prove valuable in tiebreaking scenarios at the end the of the season.

Tia Jade Smith continued to provide a spark on offense with 10 kills on just 19 swings and remained dominant on the front line by tallying five blocks (2 BS, 3 BA).

Avery Breaux hit the 50-assist mark for the second time in SBC play (Oct. 4 vs. App State), finishing with that exact amount. With 15 digs she landed her team-leading 11th double-double of the season.

Bennett served up two aces in helping guide the Ragin' Cajuns to a 5-3 advantage. Louisiana has out-aced foes in each of the past five matches.

Hannah Ramirez scooped 20 digs in reaching the mark for the sixth time (first since Sept. 27 at Texas State). She hit double digits for the 21st time in 24 outings this season.
