Trojans avoided a winner-take-all scenario with tough serve to break open a close battle in fourth set
TROY, Ala. – Troy used the momentum gained in a come-from-behind opening set win to grab control of the match and held off a strong push from Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball for a 3-1 (25-23, 25-11, 15-25, 25-17) win on Saturday at Trojan Arena.
Louisiana (5-14, 1-5 Sun Belt) stormed out to a 9-3 lead, sparked by three service aces, to start the contest and held the advantage until the Trojans (15-3, 5-1 Sun Belt) used an Amara Anderson dump kill to take a 23-22 lead.
Troy claimed the first set after snapping a 23-all tie, then continued the upward trend in the second stanza firing off 13 kills at a crisp .333 percentage while limiting the Ragin' Cajuns to six kills and a -.031 percentage.
Similar to Friday night in Mobile, Louisiana fought back in the third stanza using a .500 hitting percentage to stay one step ahead of the Trojans, then leading 17-15 rolled off the final eight points to secure the win.
Back-and-forth play was the theme at the onset of the fourth set with 10 ties occurring in the first half of the frame. Elise Baranco and Kelsey Bennett scored back-to-back kills to give the Ragin' Cajuns an 11-9 lead, but the Trojans climbed back and knotted the score at 12-all.
Back-to-back service aces allowed the Trojans to break the final tie – the first of four key aces down the stretch which helped the hosts create and keep their distance from Louisiana.
