Â
SERIES HISTORY (Louisiana leads, 3-0)
• Two programs are meeting for the first time in Conway, S.C., on the Coastal Carolina campus.
• Series was initiated with Coastal Carolina's entry into the Sun Belt Conference starting with the 2017 season.
• First-ever matchup occurred April 29-30, 2017 at Lamson Park. Louisiana won all three games of the series by the run rule.
Â
A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Infield: The left side is anchored by veteran third baseman Kara Gremillion and sophomore transfer Alissa Dalton (Oklahoma) at shortstop, both preseason All-Sun Belt selections. On the right side, Kourtney Gremillion (Kara's sister) covers first base while freshman Casidy Chaumont has claimed the starter's role at second base following the season-ending injury to JUCO transfer Brittany Holland.
Â
Outfield: Senior Kelli Martinez, a preseason All-Sun Belt selection, is patrolling left field for the second straight season. Redshirt freshman Aeriyl Mass has received the majority of the starts in center field and continues to anchor the defense in that area. Senior transfer Brittany Rodriguez (Lamar) returned to the right field corner last Sunday at the Judi Garman Classic and is expected to remain in that corner.
Â
Pitchers: Senior Kylee Jo Trahan is the veteran leader of a staff that includes eight arms. Sophomore Summer Ellyson has turned in several solid starts and is the Sun Belt's current leader in ERA. Freshman Casey Dixon provides an additional option to start a contest. Carrie Boswell has been the first called up in relief duty in recent weeks. Junior Alison Deville gives the Cajuns a left-handed option out of the bullpen.
Â
Catchers: Returning starter and preseason All-Sun Belt choice Lexie Comeaux leads the group. Freshman Caitlin Garcia and sophomore Beth Ashley have also seen time behind the plate. Expect Comeaux, who started all 55 games in 2017, to resume the primary catcher's role the remainder of the season with Ashley serving as the backup.
Â
NOTEWORTHY
RAGIN' CAJUNS IN SUN BELT OPENERS: Louisiana won its Sun Belt opening series 13 times in the previous 17 seasons of league competition. The Ragin' Cajuns have claimed their Sun Belt-opening series each of the last four years, last falling in 2013 (1-2 at South Alabama). Louisiana is 42-12 all-time in Sun Belt opening series.
Â
MAKING 'EM EARN IT:Â Louisiana's pitching staff has limited foes to less than five runs 14 times in 17 outings. The three runs by No. 23 Michigan were the most the opposition scored last weekend at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
Â
MAKING 'EM EARN IT (Part 2):Â Summer Ellyson has surrendered just two earned runs over the past 32-1/3 innings she's pitched.
Â
THE BUCK STOPS HERE: Getting a ball through the infield has been a tough chore for the opposition. With the quick reflexes of Kara Gremillion at third base, the steady glove of Alissa Dalton at shortstop and the athleticism of Casidy Chaumont at second base the Ragin' Cajuns defense is nearly impenetrable. Gremillion (35 assists) and Dalton (30 assists) have combined for 65 assists from the left side, while Chaumont as added 19 assists from the right side.
Â
APPLYING PRESSURE: Whether it's a stolen base, picking up extra bases off a relay throw or utilizing the squeeze bunt – the Ragin' Cajuns keep opposing defenses on their heels. Louisiana enters the Coastal Carolina series 41-of-49 in the stolen base department.
Â
BATTLING UNTIL THE END:Â The Ragin' Cajuns own six come-from-behind wins on the young season. Two weeks ago, the squad rallied twice in the Louisiana Classics (Feb. 23 vs. North Florida; Feb. 25 vs. Memphis).
Â
YOUTH IS BEING SERVED: Louisiana likely has one of the youngest starting lineups in the nation. In the batting order, there are five underclassmen appearing in a starter's role. In the pitching circle, the Ragin' Cajuns have utilized three youngsters which includes two freshmen (Casey Dixon, Carrie Boswell).
Â
WHATEVER IT TAKES: Whether it's been a 20-strikeout game, a 185-pitch effort in a win over No. 2 Florida, a no-hitter or a lengthy relief effort (9-2/3 innings vs. Memphis), sophomore pitcher Summer Ellyson personifies the mentality of the Ragin' Cajuns squad – doing whatever it takes to succeed.
Â
BATTLE TESTED: The Ragin' Cajuns have faced the nation's ninth-toughest schedule through the season's first four weekends. Louisiana's opponents through the first 17 games have a combined .646 winning percentage. The squad has played six games against nationally ranked foes: RV Oregon State, Florida (3 games), Michigan and Baylor.
Â

• Freshman pitcher Casey Dixon was impressive in the circle during the Judi Garman Classic. With 3-1/3 scoreless innings pitched in relief vs. Michigan and a complete game against Fresno State, Dixon exited the tournament with only two runs and seven hits allowed in 10-1/3 innings in the circle.
• Louisiana seeks to build upon a solid day at the plate to close out the Judi Garman Classic. The Ragin' Cajuns produced 17 hits over 13 innings at the plate which included out-hitting No. 8 Baylor 8-4.
