Ragin' Cajuns Split Saturday Pair in Louisiana Classics Action

2/24/2018 11:19:00 PM | Softball

LAFAYETTE – 15th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball split a pair of games on Saturday in the 32nd Annual Louisiana Classics tournament at Lamson Park.

Louisiana (10-3) was edged by North Florida 1-0 on an unearned run that the Ospreys scored in the seventh inning of a pitcher's duel.

In the nightcap, the Ragin' Cajuns saw four players produce multiple hits in a 7-4 win over UMBC. Casidy Chaumont's third home run of the season, a two-run launch, put the game away in the sixth inning.

THE BASICS VS. NORTH FLORIDA
Summer Ellyson limited the Ospreys to four hits over seven innings and struck out six. UNF's Sydney Matzko matched her (7.0 IP, 4 H, 5 K) as the pitcher's duel took center stage.

UNF got a leadoff single to start the top of the seventh, then took advantage of a Cajuns miscue on a sacrifice bunt attempt and went to the bunt game to push across the tiebreaking run.

Senior left fielder Kelli Martinez was 2-for-2 at the plate, picking up the first of two multiple-hit games she would record on the day.

THE BASICS VS. UMBC
Louisiana plated single runs in its first three at bats to grab quick 3-0 lead over UMBC. The Retrievers drew even in the bottom of the third with a three-spot of their own, aided by an error in the frame.

The stalemate didn't last long as Beth Ashley delivered an RBI double in the top of the fourth for a 4-3 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns added breathing room for relief pitcher Casey Dixon in the sixth inning with runs crossing on a Kourtney Gremillion sacrifice fly and Chaumont's two-run home run.

Ashley and Chaumont led the offense with two RBI apiece. It marked the third multiple-RBI game of the season for both players.

Martinez (2-for-4, 1 RBI) posted her second multiple-hit game of the day and Alissa Dalton (2-for-5, 2 R) picked up her team-leading seventh multiple-hit game of the season.

Carrie Boswell and Dixon, pitching in relief, combined to hold UMBC to a single run over the final 4-2/3 innings.
