SETTING THE SCENE
15th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball hosts the 32nd Annual Louisiana Classics tournament Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 22-25 at Lamson Park. The event wraps up a season-opening homestand which began back on Feb. 8 with the Mardi Gras Classic.

Joining the Ragin' Cajuns (7-2) for the tournament is Memphis, North Florida, Southeastern Louisiana and UMBC.

Louisiana opens play in the Louisiana Classics on Thursday at 4 p.m. against in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana.

The weekend action marks the closes out the month of February for Louisiana. The squad is on the road the following two weekends, not returning to Lamson Park until March 15.

The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off a four-game split of games against nationally ranked teams, defeating RV Oregon State and claiming the finale of the series with No. 2 Florida in walk-off fashion.

Fans can hear all of the Ragin' Cajuns games in the Louisiana Classics on SportsRadio ESPN 1420-AM in the Acadiana region and worldwide on the ESPN 1420 app. A live video stream, produced by the Ragin' Cajuns Digital Network, will be available at RaginCajuns.com/Watch.

SERIES HISTORIES
Southeastern Louisiana (Louisiana leads, 46-1): Cajuns extended series win streak to 30 games with a 13-5 (5 inn.) win in April 2017 at Lamson Park … That was only the third meeting since the turn of the century … Majority of the meetings took place from 1986-99 in midweek, home-and-home doubleheaders.

North Florida (First Meeting): The pair of Louisiana Classics matchups marks the first-ever meetings between the Ragin' Cajuns and Ospreys.

UMBC (First Meeting): Saturday's closing game, featuring the two programs, marks the first meeting.

Memphis (Louisiana leads, 3-0): Tigers' second trip to Lamson Park – visited for 2014 Ragin' Cajuns Invitational … Programs last met in 2014 with Louisiana winning the matchup in the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational and at the Gulfport (Miss.) College Classic.

A QUICK LOOK AT THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Infield: The left side is anchored by veteran third baseman Kara Gremillion and sophomore transfer Alissa Dalton (Oklahoma) at shortstop, both preseason All-Sun Belt selections. On the right side, Kourtney Gremillion (Kara's sister) covers first base while freshman Casidy Chaumont has emerged as the front-runner at second base following the season-ending injury to JUCO transfer Brittany Holland.

Outfield: Senior Kelli Martinez, a preseason All-Sun Belt selection, is patrolling left field for the second straight season. Redshirt freshman Aeriyl Mass received the majority of the starts in center field opening weekend and has continued to anchor the defense in that area. Senior transfer Brittany Rodriguez (Lamar) has taken hold of the right field corner and is settling in as the team's leadoff hitter.

Pitchers: Senior Kylee Jo Trahan is the veteran leader of a staff that includes eight arms. Freshman Casey Dixon, sophomore Summer Ellyson and freshman Carrie Boswell are also likely candidates to receive starts in the season's opening month. Junior Alison Deville gives the Cajuns a left-handed option out of the bullpen. Redshirt freshmen Kirsten Pruett and Samantha Bradley both debuted last weekend in the Florida series.

Catchers: Returning starter and preseason All-Sun Belt choice Lexie Comeaux leads the group. Freshman Caitlin Garcia and sophomore Beth Ashley have also seen time behind the plate. Expect a rotation at the position this season as the coaching staff seeks to lessen the load for Comeaux, who started all 55 games in 2017.

NOTEWORTHY
MOVING UP: For the second straight week, the Ragin' Cajuns advanced in the national polls. Louisiana moved up one spot to No. 15 in the NFCA ranking and jumped two spots up to No. 17 in the ESPN/USA Softball listing.

SUMMER HONORED: A pair of wins over nationally ranked teams, highlighted by an 11-inning effort against No. 2 Florida, earned sophomore pitcher Summer Ellyson the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week award this week.

APPLYING PRESSURE: Whether it's a stolen base, picking up extra bases off a relay throw or utilizing the squeeze bunt – the Ragin' Cajuns keep opposing defenses on their heels. The squad used their speed to force No. 2 Florida into at least one throwing error each game of last weekend's series.

IN THE ZONE: Sophomore Alissa Dalton has emerged as the Ragin' Cajuns most dangerous hitter. She's yet to strikeout this season (35 plate appearances). She enters the weekend on a six-game hitting streak, having gone 14-for-24 (.583) at the plate during the timeframe.

MULTIPLE STARS: Whether it's been Kylee Jo Trahan and Summer Ellyson with big moments in the circle, Alissa Dalton with a squeeze bunt for the winning run and Casidy Chaumont with a walk-off homer or Lexie Comeaux with a back-breaking homer – Louisiana has seen defining moments from several players.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS: Early results have shown that the Ragin' Cajuns pitching staff success will be a collective effort. Coach Gerry Glasco has mentioned he'd like to see a "staff" approach as the season progresses. Kylee Jo Trahan, Summer Ellyson, Casey Dixon and Carrie Boswell have delivered solid starts thus far.

DOUBLE DOWN DEFENSE: The Ragin' Cajuns turned five double plays in the weekend series with No. 2 Florida. They also played an 11-inning game, error free. Louisiana has shown this area can be one the team's defining characteristics that makes them a tough out, come postseason play.

QUICK HITS
• Brittany Rodriguez has served as the Ragin' Cajuns leadoff hitter each of the past seven games.
• Alissa Dalton has fielded all 27 chances at shortstop cleanly (9 PO, 18 A).
• The 5-3 putout is a unique one for Louisiana as it pairs sisters Kara Gremillion (third base) and Kourtney Gremillion (first base). The siblings are one the playing field together for the first time since Spring 2015 at St. Amant High School.
• Louisiana is taking advantage of the speed on its bench. The squad is 23-for-27 in stolen base opportunities after two weekends of play.
• The Ragin' Cajuns coaching staff includes Joe Guthrie (assisted Gerry Glasco in 2017 Scrap Yard Dawgs NPF title run) and NFCA All-American pitchers Ellen Renfroe Reed and Courtnay Foster. Guthrie coordinates the team's defense while Renfroe Reed and Foster team up to tutor the squad's pitching staff.

UP NEXT
No. 15 Louisiana competes away from Lamson Park for the first time in the Gerry Glasco era next weekend traveling to Fullerton, Calif., to participate in the Judi Garman Classic.

During the event, scheduled for Friday-Sunday, March 2-4 on the Cal State Fullerton campus, the Ragin' Cajuns will face No. 20 Michigan on Friday, Iowa and Michigan State on Saturday, then wrap up play on Sunday against Fresno State and No. 8 Baylor.
