EDINBURG, Texas – Louisiana Women's Basketball (2-5, 0-0 SBC) dropped its second-straight game of the weekend, losing to the hosting UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros (5-3, 0-0 WAC) 75-60, to wrap up the Texas Rio Grande Valley: Battle on the Boarder at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Sophomore center Ty'Reona Doucet finished with a team-high 16 points (6-for-7 from the field), while freshmen guards Brandi Williams and Diamond Morrison each finished with 13 points apiece, giving Louisiana three scorers in double-digits. On the defensive end, Louisiana guarded the perimeter well, holding UTRGV to 28 percent shooting from three-point range during the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED (First Half): Louisiana opened the game on an 8-2 run to jump on UTRGV to start the game, but the Vaqueros answered quickly and would not let Louisiana pull away during the period. The Ragin' Cajuns did push things to an 11-point lead with 4:29 to go in the period when Williams hit back-to-back free throws, but UTRGV finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to cut into Louisiana's lead, with the score sitting at 23-19 heading into the second quarter.
Through the second quarter, Louisiana held onto a small lead, pushing it to a quarter high three-points three times in the period each time UTRGV looked to cut into the lead. A two-point basket from Morrison with 1:29 to go in the quarter gave Louisiana its last real lead of the game, with the score sitting at 31-28.
UTRGV then went on a 7-2 run to wrap up the half and took the lead, carrying a three-point lead, 36-33, as the half came to an end.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Half): A three-point basket from Morrison, followed by a layup from Doucet allowed Louisiana to keep pace with UTRGV through the first three-minutes of the third quarter. But UTRGV looked to pull away, taking a four-point lead with 5:12 after a two-point basket was hit to put the score at 42-38.
Louisiana did take the lead, with 3:27 to go in the period, following a pull-up jumper by freshman Andrea Cournoyer that put Louisiana up 44-42. But a 10-0 run by UTRGV to end the quarter allowed the Vaqueros to pull away for what would be for good heading into the final period leading 52-44.
Louisiana did not give up completely, cutting the deficit to single-digits several times through the final quarter, but a three-point basket from Krisynthia Sampson with 3:11 left in the game was the difference for UTRGV to stay ahead of Louisiana, and the Vaqueros came away with the 75-60 win.
GAME NOTES: Docuet was named to the All-Tournament Team following her solid weekend in both games; Morrison, who finished with 13 points, had a career-high six assists in the game.
UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana next plays on Dec. 8, when the Ragin' Cajuns return home to the CAJUNDOME to host Sam Houston State, with the game scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip and it will be televised on COX Sports TV.
