Ragin' Cajuns Cap Off Weekend With 4-0 Win At A-State

Shiaelis earns first dual match victory with straight-set clincher at No. 5
JONESBORO, Ark. – Freshman India Shiaelis helped clinch the doubles point early for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team before her straight-set victory at No. 5 singles clinched a 4-0 victory over Arkansas State in a Sun Belt Conference match on Sunday at the A-State Tennis Courts.
Louisiana (6-8) made quick work in doubles play against Arkansas State (1-14) before claiming singles matches at No. 4, 5 and 6. The Ragin' Cajuns top-half of the lineup – Alexandra Way, Kelly Drew and Lucile Delabarre – each claimed the opening set in their respective matches before all were unfinished.
"We came out today with a different energy and a stronger mindset," head coach Stephanie Vallejos said. "Even for the matches that went unfinished, I was proud of the team for taking the first set on all courts."
Shiaelis, who earned her first career collegiate victory in dual matches, posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over ASU's Tori Roberts at No. 5 singles to clinch the match for Louisiana.
Louisiana opened doubles play at No. 2 with Drew and Carla Ortega improving to 4-0 on the season with a 6-1 win over Roberts and Shannon O'Brien. Shiaelis and Way, competing for the first time as a tandem in dual matches, clinched the doubles point for Louisiana as they recorded a 6-3 win over Julie Gauguery and Allison Quammen at No. 3.
Abby Johnson gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 2-0 lead as she defeated A-State's Victoria Pisani at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0, before Ortega posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Quammen at No. 6.
Louisiana will return to action on Friday (March 31) when it plays host to Incarnate Word in a 3:30 p.m. match at Cajun Courts. Admission to all Ragin' Cajuns tennis matches is free.
