LAFAYETTE – No. 18 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball and No. 4 Alabama split a doubleheader on Saturday as a three-game weekend series got underway at Lamson Park.
Â
Sydney Littlejohn and Alexis Osorio combined for a three-hit shutout in Game 1 as the Crimson Tide picked up a 3-0 win. Alabama grabbed hold of the lead with a solo home run in the first inning from Peyton Grantham and the pitching made the lead stand.
Â
Beth Ashley and Lexie Comeaux both homered and combined to go 5-for-6 at the plate with 6 RBI to power Louisiana to an 11-2 (6 inn.) win in Game 2. The Ragin' Cajuns set season-high totals in runs and hits (12) and also recorded the most runs and largest margin of victory in the all-time series between the two schools.
Â
Louisiana (5-3) and Alabama (7-1) conclude the series with the rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. Steve Peloquin has the call on SportsRadio ESPN 1420-AM in the Lafayette area, along with access to the internet via the Radio Pup app. A free live web stream is available on Ragin' Cajuns All-Access.
Â
The Crimson Tide, visiting Lafayette for the first time since March 2003, collected their first win at Lamson Park in the opener. The Ragin' Cajuns triumph in the nightcap halted a three-game losing streak that began last Sunday with the Louisiana Classics-ending games against Southern Miss.
Â
A crowd of 2,210 witnessed the Top 25 doubleheader marking the fourth playing date with crowd of 2,000-plus this season at Lamson Park.
Â
Game 1
Macey Smith appeared headed for a quick 1-2-3 first inning before Grantham gave Alabama the early lead with a two-out solo home run. Â A two-out single by Aleah Craighton and walk from DJ Sanders gave Louisiana traffic in the bottom half, but Littlejohn induced a flyout from Daniella Chavez to end the threat.
Â
Bailey Hemphill increased the Crimson Tide's advantage to 2-0 in the third inning with a sharp single past Kara Gremillion that went down the left field line to score Demi Turner.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns loaded the bases in the bottom of the third only to have Osorio enter in relief of Littlejohn and induce a fielder's choice grounder from Chavez to keep the hosts off of the scoreboard.
Â
Alabama added a single run in the fourth inning on a Cajuns error and Osorio struck out six and allowed only one hit over the final four innings to preserve the win.
Â
Game 2
It was the Ragin' Cajuns who grabbed the early advantage in the nightcap. Louisiana plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the final tallies coming on a two-run single by Comeaux.
Â
Alex Stewart held the Crimson Tide off balance through the first four innings, yielding just three hits.
Â
Louisiana created ample breathing room for Stewart by pushing across four runs in the fourth inning beginning with a solo home run by Comeaux (her first collegiate home run). Back-to-back bunt singles from Kassidy Zeringue and Kelli Martinez set the stage for a two-run double from Haley Hayden, which stretched the lead to 7-0, and she scored on a single to left center by Craighton for an eight-run edge.
Â
Alabama extended the contest in the fifth inning with a two-run single by Marisa Runyon. An inning later, the Ragin' Cajuns walked off with the run-rule triumph when Ashley launched a three-run home run into the left field bleachers.
Â
Ashley and Comeaux each posted a career-high three RBI which is tied with Craighton for the most by a Cajun this season. Comeaux was 3-for-3 at the plate, collecting the first three-hit game this season on the squad.
Â
Craighton and Sanders each went 2-for-3 at the plate to each post their team-leading third multiple-hit game.
Â
Stewart improved to 3-1 on the season and earned her sixth career victory over a Top 25 team. The 2016 All-American's list of career Top 25 triumphs includes wins over Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M and Baylor last season.
