Varnado, Trojans Defeat Ragin' Cajuns In SBC Contest, 100-88

LAFAYETTE – Jordan Varnado scored 31 points and grabbed six rebounds while Troy earned its first victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in four years with a 100-88 victory in a Sun Belt Conference men's basketball game on Saturday at the Cajundome.
Jeremy Hollimon came off the bench to score 25 for Troy (13-12, 5-8 SBC), which snapped a seven-game losing streak to Louisiana (14-11, 4-9 SBC). The win was the for the Trojans over the Ragin' Cajuns since a 71-52 victory on Feb. 2, 2013 in Troy and its first in Lafayette since an 81-67 win on Feb. 26, 2009.
Troy built a nine-point lead in the first half as a 3-pointer by Holliman gave the Trojans a 32-23 lead with 5:23 remaining in the first half. Louisiana would get as close as 33-32 on a pair of free throws by Frank Bartley with 2:50 remaining in the half before the Trojans would take a 42-39 lead at halftime.
Jay Wright, who scored 26 points while making a career-high seven 3-pointers, gave Louisiana its first lead since the opening minute when his 3-pointer put the Ragin' Cajuns ahead, 47-46, with 17:10 remaining in the game.
Both teams traded buckets for nearly four minutes before a 3-pointer by Kevin Baker with 12:44 remaining gave Troy the lead for good, 58-56.
A pair of free throws by Holliman with 11:05 remaining would begin a 15-0 run for Troy, eventually turning a 60-58 slugfest into a 76-58 contest. Troy would take an 83-64 lead with 5:01 remaining after a Holliman layup and Louisiana would get as close as 89-83 after Johnathan Stove converted a three-point play with 1:10 left.
Bartley scored 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting for Louisiana while freshman Justin Miller added 16 points and Bryce Washington 14. Washington pulled down eight rebounds for the Ragin' Cajuns while Wright dished out six assists and increased his career scoring total to 994 points.
Louisiana will host South Alabama on Monday in a Sun Belt Conference game at 7:15 p.m.
