Louisiana wraps up road trip on Saturday at No. 24 Mississippi State
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead before claiming matches in singles play to record a 4-0 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team on Friday at the USM Tennis Facility.
Louisiana, playing the second of three road matches in as many days, fell to 1-3 overall on the season. The Ragin' Cajuns will wrap up their three-match roadtrip on Saturday in Starkville, Miss., against No. 24-ranked Mississippi State at 11 a.m.
Southern Miss (3-2) opened doubles play with a win at No. 2 as Tzu-Hui Chen and Rikeetha Pereira defeated Alexandra Way and Abby Johnson, 6-2. The Golden Eagles then clinched the doubles point for a 1-0 lead as Alex Kitchen and Carolin Drescher earned a 6-4 decision over Kelly Drew and Lucile Delabarre at No. 1.
Tjasa Jerse gave USM a 2-0 lead in the match as she claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Carla Ortega at No. 5 singles. Claudia Castella followed with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over India Shiaelis at No. 6 before Kitchen clinched the match for the Golden Eagles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Way at No. 2.
