LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team opens the second year of the Stephanie Vallejos era on Friday when it travels to Monroe to compete in the ULM Warhawk Fall Tennis Tournament at the Raymond Heard Stadium.
The two-day event begins at 8:30 a.m. with doubles play followed by two rounds of singles action. Joining Louisiana and host ULM in the tournament are Tulane, Louisiana Tech, Stephen F. Austin, McNeese State and Southeastern Louisiana.
The Ragin' Cajuns, who finished 11-10 last spring, returns five letterwinners from last year's team, highlighted by All-Sun Belt Conference performer Kelly Drew (2nd team doubles), senior Alexandra Way and juniors Abby Johnson and Elena Sava.
"I'm looking to getting us back into competition and having our returning players build off of last year," Vallejos said. "For our new players, this is a chance to watch them compete, how they handle the pressure and how they play at this level."
Drew, who posted a 15-4 overall record in doubles play last season, will pair with freshman Lucile Delabarre in Flight B doubles and will be joined in the bracket by Sava and freshman Marina Garcia.
Way and Johnson will pair up in Flight A doubles after posting a 9-7 record last spring that included a victory at the Sun Belt Conference Championships. Returning player Carla Ortega and freshman India Shiaelis will compete in Flight C, where they are the top-seed in the flight.
In singles play, Sava will compete in Flight 1 and will face ULM's Karolina Snita at 9:15 a.m. Drew will face McNeese State's Sarah Jurakova in Flight 2 with Johnson battling Madina Vorotnikova of SLU in Flight 3, along with Way facing ULM's Patricia Villar.
Delabarre and Garcia will each compete in Flight 4 with Delabarre facing SLU's Ceci Mercier at 9:15 a.m., and Garcia facing Vivian Borbely of McNeese State. In Flight 5, Ortega will face the winner of Louisiana Tech's Haley Ballinger and Liza Aginskaya of Stephen F. Austin in the semifinals with Shiaelis facing Jovana Marinkovic of McNeese State in the quarterfinals.
The ULM Warhawk Tournament is one of four for the Ragin' Cajuns this fall. Louisiana will host the Ragin' Cajuns Fall Classic (Sept. 30–Oct. 1) before participating in the ITA Southern Regional (Oct. 14-17) in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and the George E. Fourmaux/SLU Invitational (Nov. 5-6) in Hammond.
