Receivers will sit out 2016 season; eligible to play in 2017
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football coach Mark Hudspeth announced on Monday that former SMU receiver Ryheem Malone and New Orleans native Ca'Ron Baham have each transferred and will play for the Ragin' Cajuns in the 2017 season.
Â
Both Malone and Baham will have to sit out the 2016 season to observe the NCAA Transfer Rule. Baham, a two-year letterwinner, will have two years of eligibility remaining while Baham, who signed with Pac-12 member Colorado, will have four years remaining.
Â
Malone, a native of Houston, Texas, played in 17 career games at SMU while catching 23 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns last season. He caught a season-best six passes against North Texas and had three receptions for 90 yards against TCU and added three catches against South Florida.
Â
Baham, who signed with Colorado as a defensive back and will play as a receiver for Louisiana, was ranked as the No. 41 overall prospect in Louisiana by 247 Sports as a senior at New Orleans' John Ehret High School. Baham would miss all but one possession of the 2015 season after suffering a knee injury in the Patriots' season-opener against Riverside Academy.
Â
As a junior, he was an honorable mention Class 5A All-State selection, and was named first-team All-District 8-5A as well as the district offensive MVP. Baham rushed for 1,514 yards and scored 23 touchdowns while recording three 200-yard games and seven 100-yard performances.
Â
Louisiana will open the season on Sept. 3 with an 11 a.m. contest against Mountain West opponent Boise State. The game will be televised on the American Sports Network and ESPN 3/WatchESPN.

Season tickets are available by calling the Cajundome Box Office at (337) 265-2357 or visiting on-line at RaginCajuns.com/Tickets.
