LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team hosts its annual spring tournament on Saturday, March 5 at Earl K. Long Gym with matches beginning at 10 a.m.
Â
Admission to the event is free. There will be two courts with a new match occurring each hour over the course of the day. All matches will feature two sets played to 25 points.
Â
The morning session features matches from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. After a lunch break, afternoon action runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns open tournament play with San Jancinto College at 10 a.m., immediately followed by a matchup with Northwestern State at 11 a.m. Both matches will be on Court 2.
Â
Staying on Court 2, Louisiana takes on Missouri State-West Plains at 2 p.m., to kick off the afternoon session, and then meets Southern Miss in the tournament finale at 4 p.m.
Â
The tournament wraps up the first week of team practice, which began on Tuesday, for the Ragin' Cajuns in the spring 2016 non-championship segment.
Â
"Saturday should be really fun to see who is going to show up," Louisiana volleyball head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "This week of team practice has been awesome and I feel like we've turned a huge corner in terms of strength, court awareness and team unity.
Â
"Tournaments like this one are incredibly important because it shows us who is showing growth throughout the spring," Mazeitis-Fontenot added. "It's just like spring football – a time for our team to train, and get better. Our staff can work with them and in turn it really gets us on the same page for the upcoming fall. Usually if you have a great spring, you will have a great fall."
Â
Mazeitis-Fontenot is eager to see how her squad's training, starting from the end of the fall 2015 season and continuing with individual sessions at the start of the spring 2016 semester, translates into the level of play on the court.
Â
"From the end of the fall to now, our girls are so much more powerful," Mazeitis-Fontenot stressed. "The amount of strength moves that we are able to make now, that we weren't in the fall, is tremendous for such a short period of time and that's a testament to our strength coach Jenna Romanelli."
Â
The list of teams joining the Ragin' Cajuns at Earl K. Long Gym this weekend includes: Northwestern State, Missouri State-West Plains, San Jacinto College, Southeastern Louisiana and Southern Miss.
Â
The weekend's event is the first of four possible playing dates allowed by the NCAA in the spring non-championship segment. The Ragin' Cajuns are scheduled to participate in tournaments in Houston (April 9) and Baton Rouge (April 16) in April.
