Rice Tops Louisiana in Straight Sets at Adidas Invite

9/11/2015 8:04:00 PM | Volleyball

HOUSTON – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team fell in straight sets to host-Rice in its opening match of the Adidas Rice Invitational Friday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston.

Rice (6-2) hit .245 and held a 48-27 advantage in kills in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) triumph over Louisiana (3-6).

The Cajuns, who hit .223 during a recent four-match homestand, were limited to a .089 percentage. The offense, held to 27 kills, missed Sara Mossakowski's presence as she sat out due to a lingering injury.

Katey Kyle led Louisiana with eight kills. Chanelle Gardner and Stacey Reilly each added six kills. Reilly, limited to back row since making her debut Sept. 5 vs. Houston, moved to the frontline for the first time this season.

Setter Jessica Bartczyszyn was the Ragin' Cajuns' top blocker, with career-high six (0 BS, 6 BA). The Cajuns collected eight total team blocks, the fifth time in the past six matches reaching at least seven blocks.

Louisiana concludes play in the Adidas Rice Invitational on Saturday with matches against No. 23 Colorado at 12:30 p.m., and Sam Houston State at 5 p.m. Saturday's matches are the final ones in pre-conference tournament action this season.

The Owls erased a 3-2 deficit in the opening set with a 4-0 run that included three kills. A kill by Reilly closed the Cajuns deficit to 8-6, but a block and subsequent kill stretched Rice's lead to 10-6.

The final push for Rice came midway through the set when a 5-1 run opened an 18-9 lead.

Louisiana began the second set hitting .333 and needed just 15 swings for six kills. As a result, the Cajuns and Owls were deadlocked at 12-all at the midpoint.

The teams swapped points and remained tied until back-to-back kills by Portia Okafor and Chelsey Harris provided the Owls a 16-14 advantage. The Cajuns fought back into a ties at 18-all and 20-all, the latter after kills from Kyle on consecutive rallies.

The Owls recpatrued the momentum with three straight scores as a Bartczyszyn set was off target, Reilly committed an attack error and Madison McDaniel served up an ace. The hosts went on to win 25-22 and grab a 2-0 lead in the match.

A kill by Gardner and Okafor attack error put Louisiana up 2-0 to start the third set. Rice countered with four straight points, a kill by Kyley Reed and three straight Cajuns miscues, to grad the lead for good.

The Owls took advantage of a 13-8 edge in kills and a -.029 hitting percentage by the Cajuns to win 25-20 and clinch the match.

Rice avenged a five-set loss to Louisiana in last season's Adidas Rice Invitational and increased its lead in the all-time series to 8-1.
