Ragin' Cajuns Return to Campus, Begin Fall Camp Monday

LAFAYETTE – Members of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team arrived on campus Sunday and reported for fall camp to begin preparations for the upcoming 2015 season.

Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot welcomed back 10 returning players from last season's 20-win squad, including three returning starters, and eight newcomers. Newly hired associate head coach Jenny Andrew and assistant coach Trey Cruz are set to begin their first camp with the Cajuns.

After a team lunch, Sunday will be spent conducting individual and team meetings, reviewing academic requirements, issuing equipment, taking team pictures and fulfilling other obligations before on-court practices begin Monday morning at Earl K. Long Gym.

The Ragin' Cajuns will hold practice over the next two weeks prior to the start of classes on Aug. 24. Practice will consist of position sessions in the morning and team practices in the afternoon.

"The biggest thing we are going to work on in preseason is our serve receive," Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "We have lost a lot of ball control in serve receive the last two years and that will be the toughest thing to replace right now. In addition to plenty of reps, getting our players to feel experienced in that role is key.

"We will also focus on confidence and team building," Mazeitis-Fontenot added. "We are extremely young, but that doesn't mean we can't be great. We will put a lot of time and effort into making sure that our players feel great about competing with anybody they step on the court against."

Mazeitis-Fontenot enters her eighth season as head volleyball coach at Louisiana. The Ragin' Cajuns seek to build upon a 20-13 showing in 2014, the program's first 20-win season since 1990.

The returning starters are highlighted by last season's kills leader Sara Mossakowski (335 kills, 2.60 kps) and top frontline defender Chanelle Gardner (106 blocks, 0.84 bps). Stacey Reilly, who started all 33 matches in 2014 and produced 250 kills, completes the group.

Among the group of newcomers is Lafayette High School product McKenzie John who transferred from Dominican (N.Y.) College. John led NCAA Division II in attacks per set, kills per set and points per set as a sophomore in 2014, resulting in first team all-region and second team all-america honors.

The Cajuns coaching staff will be seeking to find a new starter at setter and libero. Andrea Hole (1,290 assists in 2014), who served as starting setter the past two years, and Caitlyn Auxilien (505 digs in 2014), who held the libero spot the previous four seasons, completed their collegiate career in 2014.

Louisiana opens the 2015 season Aug. 28-29 in Lubbock, Texas, participating in the Texas Tech Invitational. The Cajuns open tournament play against Houston at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 and also face Texas Tech (Aug. 28) and Utah State (Aug. 29).

The home portion of the schedule opens Sept. 4-5 with Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic featuring the Ragin' Cajuns, Houston, Jackson State and Nicholls State.
