Landry and Sanders Power Cajuns In GSU Opener
4/3/2015 8:34:00 PM | Softball
LAFAYETTE – Shellie Landry doubled twice driving home a pair of runs and DJ Sanders hit her first career home run to end the game early as No. 12 Louisiana defeated Georgia State 10-1 in six innings in the opening game of a Sun Belt series Friday evening at Lamson Park.
Alex Stewart started in the circle for Louisiana (28-5, 13-3 Sun Belt) and limited Georgia State (23-13, 5-5 Sun Belt) to one run and two hits while striking out eight.
With ULM's loss in the opening game at Troy, the Ragin' Cajuns claimed sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt standings.
Louisiana and Georgia State conclude the series with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. Both games can be heard on SportsRadio ESPN 1420-AM and espn1420.com. Live stats and video will be available on RaginCajuns.com. The Cajuns need one more win for their sixth SBC series win in as many played.
Sanders (2-for-4, 2 runs, 1 HR, 3 RBI) finished with a game-high three RBI, all coming on her game-ending home run in the sixth inning.
Landry's doubles extended her hitting streak to a team-high 11 games. Haley Hayden (1-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) drew a walk in the fourth inning to extend her reached-base streak to 22 games.
"Once we got the offense going, I felt we had quality at bats from top to bottom," associate head coach T.J. Hubbard mentioned. "DJ (Sanders) came up big for us at the end. She's been swinging the bat well as of late. And Meagan (Thomas) after pinch-hitting and staying in the game had some good at bats. Just proud of the way the kids competed."
Stewart picked up the win for the Cajuns for the third straight game (started and won final two games at Texas State). She improved her season record to 7-0 (3-0 SBC). The Zionsville, Ind., native has surrendered just three runs and eight hits over 16 innings during the current stretch of consecutive starts.
"Alex did a great job of getting out of a couple of jams," Hubbard said. "Her pitches today were as competitive as I've seen in the last couple of weeks."
After UL broke a scoreless tie in the second inning on a Kelli Martinez sacrifice fly, Landry's first double scored Sanders (single) and Meagan Thomas (pinch-hit walk) to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Panthers prevented a shutout with a two-out, solo home run by Megan Litumbe in the fourth inning. The Cajuns responded with three runs in their half of the frame pushing the advantage to 6-1, the first run coming on Landry's second double of the night.
Stewart worked around a leadoff walk in the fifth inning and one-out error in the sixth inning to maintain the distance from the Panthers.
Leading 7-1 following a Hayden RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, a one-out double by Kelsey Vincent and a walk by Leandra Maly set the stage for Louisiana ending the game early in the sixth inning.
Sanders, a true freshman from Columbus, Miss., and USA Junior National Team selection, took the first offering from GSU reliever Taylor Thorpe over the right field wall for the three-run blast that extended the lead to 10-1 for the run-rule margin.
Katie Worley was charged with the loss for GSU, allowing the first three Cajuns runs in 2-1/3 innings of work. Thorpe surrendered seven runs in her three innings of relief.
