Quartet With Multiple Hits Guides Cajuns Past Eagles

LAFAYETTE – Shellie Landry's three-hit effort topped a 13-hit showing for the No. 7 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team in a 8-2 win over Georgia Southern in the opening game of a Sun Belt Conference series Monday evening at Lamson Park.
Landry, 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, was one of four Cajuns with multiple hits. Aleah Craighton, Leandra Maly and Samantha Walsh each posted two hits.
Landry's home run came in the fourth inning and opened a 4-0 lead for the Cajuns (21-3, 6-1 Sun Belt). The Eagles (6-17, 0-4 Sun Belt) answered by cutting the lead in half on a RBI double from Emily Snider in the fifth inning.
Christina Hamilton, who relieved Jordan Wallace earlier after a pair of walks and was greeted by an infield single and Snider's double, stranded two runners in scoring position to preserve the lead for Louisiana.
"They gave her a rude welcoming and she regroups and steadies the ship," Louisiana softball head coach Michael Lotief said of Hamilton's performance. "I thought Christina did a great job. She entered into a tough circumstance and did a great job."
Kelsey Vincent's team-leading fifth home run in Sun Belt Conference games upped the advantage to 7-2 in the sixth inning helping the Cajuns put the Eagles away.
Wallace pitched 4-1/3 hitless innings and registered career strikeout No. 800 in the second inning, becoming only the fifth player in program history to reach the milestone. A pair of walks issued in the fifth inning wound up causing her to be charged with two runs.
The Ragin' Cajuns extended their win streak at Lamson Park to 25 games. Louisiana is 18-0 in the facility in 2015.
Louisiana and Georgia Southern wrap up the three-game Sun Belt series in a 4 p.m., doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17. Both games are being broadcast on SportsRadio ESPN-1420 AM with Steve Peloquin and Bobby Neveaux calling the action.
After two scoreless innings, a two-run double by Walsh in the third inning put Louisiana in front 2-0. A Haley Hayden single with two outs in the fourth, which extended her hit streak to six games and marked her 13th straight game reaching base, extended the frame and set the stage of Landry's two-run shot into the left field bleachers.
Back-to-back, one-out walks gave Georgia Southern two runners on base in the fifth. Hamilton relieved Wallace, but the Eagles kept building momentum. An infield single by Taylor Rogers loaded the bases, then Snider's double plated two runs to make it 4-2. Hamilton retired the next two batters, a strikeout of Morgan Robinson and ground out from Kaitlyn Johnson to minimize the damage.
Reliever Marla Thompson kept the game from getting away from the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth. The Cajuns would load the bases three times, scoring only once on a Hayden fielder's choice grounder when Maly beat the throw home.
Hamilton retired Georgia Southern in order in the top of the sixth inning, posting two strikeouts in the process. Vincent's home run, a line drive over the right field fence, provided a cushion. Kelli Martinez then slapped a single up the middle to score Sanders (two-out walk) for the final margin.
