Women's Tennis To Open Season On Wednesday

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana women's tennis team will open up the 2015 season on Wednesday at 1 p.m. when the Ragin' Cajuns host Southern and Xavier (La.) in a doubleheader at Cajun Courts.
Admission to the contest is free and will be available to follow via live scoring on RaginCajuns.com.
"Coach Conyers (Southern) and Coach Green (Xavier) will bring two disciplined and experienced teams to Cajun Courts for our home opener," Louisiana head coach Greg Harkins said. "Southern has already registered a solid victory over a strong McNeese State squad and Xavier brings with them Nour Abbes, who is one of the top players in NAIA tennis."
The Cajuns will be looking to improve off a 7-17 season a year ago, one which saw them go 4-6 in Sun Belt Conference play and pick up a 4-0 win over Western Kentucky in the opening round of the SBC Tournament.
Juliette Clement is the leading returner in wins, picking up 13 victories on the singles side a year ago, including seven at the No. 5 spot in the lineup. Nelo Phiri also returns earning seven wins at the No. 1 spot last season.
That pair, along with Melissa Burckhartt and Alexandra Way make up the returning corps of the roster. Meanwhile, Harkins will be looking for immediate contributions from a number of newcomers, including Abby Johnson, Elena Sava, Lauren Dupuis and Kelly Drew.
"Every match is a challenge," Harkins said. "There are no easy ways to win other than hard work, being accountable as a team and bringing a fierce competitive attitude to the court. We encourage all of our fans to come out and support Cajun Nation."
First serve against the Jaguars is set for 1:00 p.m., followed by UL's match against Xavier (La.) 4:30 p.m.
