Cajuns to resume Sun Belt play on Saturday at home against Appalachian State

LAFAYETTE – Lafayette native Hayward Register scored 22 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead three players in double figures and help the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns defeat Spring Hill College, 74-54, in an exhibition game on Wednesday at the Cajundome.
 
Shawn Long added 15 points in limited playing time for Louisiana, which will resume Sun Belt Conference action on Saturday (Jan. 2) when it plays hosts Appalachian State. Steven Wronkoski added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Ragin' Cajuns, who had only two of its 13 players who dressed play more than 20 minutes against the Division II Badgers.
 
Register finished 6-for-10 from the floor – all from behind the 3-point line – and made all four of his free throw attempts as Louisiana scored the first eight points of the game and opened with a 19-4 run over the first 6:09.
 
Long, who played 14 minutes, finished 6-for-6 from the floor as the Ragin' Cajuns made eight of their first 10 shots and finished 23-for-51 (45.1 percent) for the game. Louisiana went 10-for-29 (34.5 percent) from behind the 3-point line as Wronkoski was 2-for-2, Long made his lone attempt from long range and Jay Wright was 1-for-2.
 
Louisiana led 38-21 at halftime as it held Spring Hill to 8-for-24 (33.3 percent) from the floor in the first half. Two free throws by Devonta Walker gave the Ragin' Cajuns their biggest lead of the game, 61-28, with 11:59 remaining before Spring Hill went on a 26-8 run to get as close as 69-54 after a Christopher Hamilton layup with 3:13 left.
 
Jay Hedgeman and Kasey Shepherd dished out four assists each to lead Louisiana while Scott Plaisance added seven rebounds.
 
Walter Massey scored 21 points off the bench to lead Spring Hill College, which finished 19-for-54 (35.2 percent) from the floor. Jackson Fos, an Abita Springs, La., native, added eight points for the Badgers with Sawyer Glick and Wesley Pietri each adding seven.
