Mountaineers Finish Strong and Claim Sweep of Cajuns

10/3/2015 9:18:00 PM | Volleyball

LAFAYETTE – After a close first set, Appalachian State committed only two attack errors over its final 63 swings to close out the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team in a straight sets sweep (25-22, 25-18, 25-9) Saturday evening at Earl K. Long Gym.

After an inconsistent first set, in which the team hit a match-low .200, Appalachian State fired on all cylinders over the final two sets to the tune of a .476 hitting percentage (32 K, 2 E, 63 TA). The Mountaineers (12-4, 5-0 Sun Belt) completed the sweep by using a 14-0 run to pull away after Louisiana forged a 6-all tie in the third set.

The Ragin' Cajuns (4-13, 0-5 Sun Belt) showed marked improvement from Friday's Arkansas State match, finishing with a .155 hitting percentage (35 K, 18 E, 110 TA).

All five Ragin' Cajuns starters posted at least four kills. Katey Kyle led the way with nine kills on 18 swings. Sara Mossakowski landed six kills while Chanelle Gardner and Stacey Reilly each contributed five kills.

Jess Keller (18) and Emily Corrigan (16) combined for 34 of the Mountaineers' 49 kills. Setter Paige Brown dished out 40 assists while scooping up a match-high 14 digs.

Louisiana heads out on a three-match road swing beginning Wednesday, Oct. 7 at ULM. The trip also includes visits to South Alabama (Oct. 9) and Troy (Oct. 10).

A kill from Gardner gave Louisiana an early 4-3 lead in the first set. Back-to-back kills from Keller and Corrigan pulled App State into a 5-all tie, the first of three ties over the next five rallies.

The Mountaineers took the lead for good at 8-7 on a kill from Corrigan. The Ragin' Cajuns stayed within striking distance and trailed 14-13 after an attack error by Keller. A 4-0 run, generated with three kills and a block thrown up by Courtney Sullivan and Cassidy Stephenson, gave the visitors breathing room.

Reilly's posted two kills late, the latter cutting the App State lead to 24-22, but a kill from Keller on the ensuing rally gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set featured a carbon copy beginning, as the Cajuns trailed 7-6 after a Mossakowski ace. App Sate scored on the next three rallies to stretch the lead to 10-6.

The Cajuns climbed back within two points on a pair of occasions. A kill from Reilly trimmed the Mountaineers lead to 13-11, but a kill from Corrigan and a block extended the lead back to four points.

The final push for the Mountaineers came at 20-16 after a Hannah Henry service error and Nia Antoine attack error placed the Cajuns in a six-point deficit.

Saturday's contest marked the first of two meetings between the two teams this season. The rematch is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. (EDT) in Boone, N.C.
