10/17/2015 9:29:00 PM | Volleyball

Louisiana opens four-match roadtrip on Tuesday at McNeese State

LAFAYETTE – Blair Winston posted a match-high 17 kills while Sara Landis posted five of her 13 kills in a decisive fifth set to lead Troy to a 26-24, 14-25, 25-18, 25-27, 15-9 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team in a Sun Belt Conference match Saturday night at Earl K. Long Gym.

Reina Terry posted a triple-double for Troy (13-11, 6-4 SBC) with 10 kills, 35 assists and 13 digs while Ali Dowdell recorded 24 digs.

Louisiana (5-17, 1-9 SBC) was led by freshman Hanna Rovira with 16 kills with Sara Mossakowski and Chanelle Gardner each adding nine. Keely Hayes posted a double-double for the Ragin' Cajuns with 37 assists and 15 digs. Freshman Sydney Davis paced Louisiana with 17 digs with Stacey Reilly adding 11 and freshman Hannah Henry 10.

The Ragin' Cajuns took control early in the first set, building a 24-17 lead after a kill by freshman Nia Antoine. But Troy rallied to score the next nine points to claim the opening set with Winston recording four kills during the span.

Louisiana, which hit .278 in the opening set, kept up the pressure on offense hitting at a .650 clip in the second set and building an early 4-1 lead. The Trojans got as close as 5-4 on a service ace by Avalon Nero, but the Ragin' Cajuns would get kills from Gardner and Mossakowski to push the lead to 7-4 and never trail for the rest of the set.

After Troy claimed the third set and built a 20-17 lead in the fourth, Louisiana would rally to claim a 24-22 lead only to have the Trojans score three straight points for a 25-24 advantage. But Terry was called for an attack error at the net to knot the set at 25-25, before an attack error by Winston and a block by Rovira sent the match to a fifth set.

The Trojans opened the fifth set with a 5-1 lead on a kill by Landis, who hit .571 in the final set and .348 for the match. The Ragin' Cajuns mounted a comeback, getting as close as 7-5 on a kill by Gardner, but the Trojans would score the next three points, highlighted by kills by Landis and Terry for a 10-5 lead.

Mossakowski recorded seven blocks and nine digs for the Ragin' Cajuns with Gardner adding five blocks and Rovira three. Louisiana posted a .212 hitting percentage for the match while posting 14 team blocks in the match.

Louisiana will open a four-match roadtrip beginning Tuesday when it travels to Lake Charles to face in-state opponent McNeese State in a 7 p.m. contest.
