Ragin’ Cajuns Fall At Georgia Southern
10/19/2014 1:20:00 PM | Volleyball
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Ragin' Cajuns got a double-double from Sara Mossakowski, but Georgia Southern was too much on Sunday afternoon, handing Louisiana a 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 29-27) loss at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Louisiana (15-8, 5-7 SBC) was close to forcing a decisive fifth set, leading 24-21 in Set 4, but Georgia Southern (5-15, 5-6 SBC) rallied back to force extra points in the set where it would eventually close out the match.
The Eagles had three players with at least 14 kills, led by Catherine Murray's 15 scores.
Meanwhile, the Cajuns hit a solid .244 for the match, led by Mossakowski's match-high 17 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Chanelle Gardner had 14 kills on 25 swings and five blocks, and Kaylee Nemeth added 10 kills on 21 swings of her own.
Andrea Hole dished out 47 assists while Caitlyn Auxilien's 12 digs led the team.
Mossakowski converted four of her seven swings in the first set into points, and Nemeth had four as well; however, the Eagles had four players with at least three kills in the first set to stake themselves to a 1-0 lead.
The Cajuns responded with their best offensive set of the day in Set 2, hitting .371 with five kills from Gardner. A 9-2 run in the middle of the set gave UL the cushion it needed to tie things up, closing it out on their fourth set-point try with a kill from Gardner.
In the third set, Georgia Southern hit .400 and grabbed an early 7-3 and never trailed. UL got to within two points at 16-14, but that was as close as it would be as the Eagles finished off the frame on a 9-2 run.
Louisiana responded with 19 kills in the fourth set, led by seven kills from Gardner and six from Mossakowski. A block from Hole on an attack by Catherine Murray put UL just a point away from extending the match; however, Georgia Southern answered with three straight points to tie it up at 24-24. Mossakowski put one home to give UL another set-point try, but again the Eagles answered, this time with consecutive points of their own. UL fought off one match-point try, but could not do it the second time with a service error and an attack error providing the final two points of the match for the Eagles.
The Ragin' Cajuns will next take on Georgia State in Atlanta on Friday before returning home for consecutive home matches against Abilene Christian (Oct. 27) and Texas State (Oct. 31).
