Game Notes

WHAT'S ON TAP?  The Cajuns return to action after three cancelled games due to inclement weather, with a three-game set at North Texas.  The Cajuns will look to improve on their 5-4 SBC record, after sweeping their last Sun Belt series.

CAJUN UPDATE:  The Cajuns followed up an 11-day break with a three-game sweep of FIU at Lamson Park.  They won in six innings in game one of a Friday doubleheader by a score 10-2, in game two 9-5, and swept the series on Saturday with a 7-5 victory.  The wins improve their record to 22-11 overall and 5-4 in Sun Belt Conference action.

THE MEAN GREEN: The Mean Green are 18-14 overall in 2013 and hold a 6-4 SBC record.  Offensively, North Texas is led by junior Brooke Foster and sophomore Jordan Terry.  Foster is batting a team high .340 with 19 runs scored, and 19 RBI on four home runs.  Terry is batting .319 and leads the team with 20 runs scored with 29 RBI and seven home runs.  In the circle, they have four players who can start, but are led by junior Ashley Kirk with eight wins and a 2.93 ERA.  UL swept the three game set last season against North Texas, at Lamson Park.

DRIVING THEM IN: Three Cajuns rank in the top four in runs batted in the Sun Belt Conference.  Sarah Draheim and Shellie Landry are tied for the conference lead with 37 and Brianna Cherry is in a tie for second with 30 on the season.  Draheim and Landry rank 35th in the nation with 1.12 RBI per game as of March 31.

WALLACE IN THE SUN BELT: Sophomore pitcher Jordan Wallace holds a 4-2 record with a 2.76 ERA with 56 strikeouts in conference games this season.  In her career, she is 15-3 with a 2.08 ERA and 139 strikeouts against conference foes.

RUNS PER GAME: With 215 runs scored this season the Cajuns are atop the Sun Belt leaderboard.  They also rank 17th in the nation with 6.52 runs per game as of March 31.

WHAT A WEEKEND: Freshman Sara Corbello had a banner series against FIU on the weekend of March 29-30.  She led the weekend off with a career-high four RBI performance going  2-for-4 with a two-run home run in game one, before matching her new career best, with her first career grand slam on Saturday in the finale.

GOING STREAKING: Sarah Draheim has hit safely in her last seven games going into the North Texas series.  It stands as the third longest hitting streak on the team this season behind her own 12 game streak (2/22-3/6) and Brianna Cherry's 10 games (2/22-3/3).

STRIKING OUT THE NATION: After a season-high 15 strikeouts in a seven inning outing against South Alabama on Sunday, March 17th, Jordan Wallace now ranks 13th in the nation with 9.6 strikeouts per seven innings.  She has fanned 157 batters in 114.1 innings this season, last year she struck out 167 batters in 186.0 innings, which is 6.28 strikeouts per seven innings.  She also ranks 21st in the nation in strikeouts.

FIRST-YEAR FOCUS: With three freshmen in the starting lineup for every game this season, the future is bright for the Cajuns.  Shellie Landry, Sara Corbello and Samantha Walsh have had a strong impact on the team in their first year of competition, combining for 13 HR and 74 RBI.  First-year players as a whole are batting .289 on the season (99-for-343) with 79 RBI, 14 HR, and 62 runs scored.  Last season a veteran Cajuns squad didn't send a freshman to the plate.

HOME RUNS...HOME RUNS EVERYWHERE: The Cajuns have hit 37 home runs on the season and lead the Sun Belt Conference.  As a team, the Cajuns rank 20th in the nation in home runs per game with 1.21.  Individually, the Cajuns have three batters in the top eight in the conference, leader Sarah Draheim with nine, as well as Brianna Cherry and Shellie Landry, both at seven home runs.

DOMINATING THE DISH: Senior catcher Sarah Draheim has been a huge presence both behind and at the plate for the Cajuns this season.  She leads the team with 218 putouts, and has started every game at catcher.  She is batting .413 on the season and leads the conference with nine home runs and is tied for the lead in RBI with 37.  Draheim batted .250 in her first three seasons.

LET'S GET IT STARTED: The Cajuns have scored in the first inning in 18-of-33 games this season, and are 13-5 in those games.  The Cajuns have scored first in 25-of-33 games and hold a record of 18-7 when scoring first.

FRESHMAN FIREPOWER: Outfielder Shellie Landry hit her first career grand slam against Southern on Feb. 26, and has now homered in back-to-back games this season twice.  Her 34 RBI not only ties for the team lead, but the entire Sun Belt Conference and she is second on the team with seven home runs.
