Another Tourney Under the Belt: The Ragin' Cajuns kicked off the 2012 season by winning the 26th Annual Louisiana Classics last weekend at Lamson Park. Louisiana beat Rutgers (15-1), No. 24 Tulsa (19-4), and Mississippi Valley State (21-0).
Offensive Juggernaut: After leading the nation with 7.76 runs per game last season, the Cajuns picked up right where they left off, scoring 55 runs for an average of 18.3 a game last weekend. UL pounded out 46 hits, nine of which left the yard.
Cajuns Climb in the Polls: UL moved up three spots in both polls that were released on Monday. The Ragin' Cajuns come in at No. 20 in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll and No. 21 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll.
Familiar Foes: Louisiana has played four of the teams participating in the Invitational. The squad is 43-30 all-time against Louisiana Tech, 12-0 vs. North Carolina, 3-1 against Northwestern, and 70-13 vs. Northwestern State.
Cajuns Honored at the Classics: Christi Orgeron was named the MVP of the 26th Annual Louisiana Classics, while Nerissa Myers, Paige Cormier, and Brianna Cherry joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
Orgeron Recognized: Orgeron was tabbed as the Sun Belt Player of the Week after crushing opposing pitchers last weekend. The senior hit .818, had three doubles, two homeruns, 12 RBI, 1.636 slugging percentage and an on base percentage of .857.
Grand Fashion: Junior shortstop Nerissa Myers hit her first career grand slam and drove in a career-best seven runs last Sunday against Mississippi Valley Sate. Her previous career-high was five RBI last season against Troy on March 5, 2011. Myers hit .429, posted an on base percentage of .714, and led the team in runs (10) and walks (5) at the Louisiana Classics.
Going, Going, Gone: Paige Cormier led all UL hitters with four homeruns, while posting a 1.818 slugging percentage and 20 total bases. The second baseman also had a .636 batting average and posted nine RBI.
Diaper Dandy: Freshman Jordan Wallace started the first two games for the Cajuns and earned her first career victory in the 19-4 victory over No. 24 Tulsa. Over the weekend, Wallace hurled six innings, giving up two earned runs and fanning nine hitters.
Mowing 'em Down: Louisiana pitchers stuck out 17 batters in 16 innings at the 26th Annual Louisiana Classics
Cleaning it up: It looks as though the Cajuns have found their cleanup hitter in Brianna Cherry. The junior roamed centerfield and collected seven hits last weekend. She also had the squad's only triple and drove n nine runs, while tallying a .714 on base percentage.
