BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team was kept from sweeping the Florida road swing here Saturday at FAU Arena as the “five-set bug” of 2012 continued.
For the fifth time in as many matches that have gone five sets, the Cajuns (10-11, 2-4 Sun Belt) were defeated as FAU (5-11, 1-5 Sun Belt) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to claim the upset victory.
Louisiana hit above .250 and registered a sideout percentage above 60 percent in claiming the first two sets for a seemingly commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
But the Cajuns hitting percentage over the final three sets was no higher than .129 and the team's sideout percentage was below 50 percent. As a result, the host-Owls staged a comeback.
With a chance at sweeping the match, the Cajuns were out-killed 14-8, hit .000 (8 kills, 8 errors, 50 attempts) and went 7-for-24 in sideout chances in the third set. That opened the door for FAU and the hosts took advantage.
The Owls hit .300 and .200 over the final two sets, respectively. The Cajuns offense – which posted 26 kills over the first two sets – picked up only 14 over the final two frames.
The Ragin' Cajuns return home on Sunday to begin preparing for a key home weekend at Earl K. Long Gym against the Arkansas schools. UL hosts Arkansas State on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m., and UALR on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
Lavinia Tataran and Blair Claypoole tied for team-high honors with 10 kills. Tataran led UL in kills for the second straight match. Tonice White was the team's top hitter, finishing with a .350 hitting percentage (8 kills, 1 error, 20 attempts).
Mandi Gavin posted a double-double, dishing out 35 assists and scooping up 15 digs to go along with six block assists. Gavin lowered her total number of assists needed to reach 3,000 career assist to 97 with Saturday's output. It sets her up for a chance to accomplish the feat next weekend at Earl K. Long Gym.
Freshman Caitlyn Auxilien posted her 17th double digits digs match of the season, finishing with a match-best 18. Auxilien increased her season total to 322, which surpasses her freshman campaign total (308).
The trio of Darija Sataric (15), Thacilli Pereira (12) and Sara Stoll (10) combined for 37 of the Owls' 56 kills. A year after being out-killed by UL 53-22 in a meeting at Earl K. Long Gym, the Owls held a 56-48 advantage in kills Saturday night.
The Cajuns' attack error woes continued, finishing with 27 marking the fifth straight match with 20-plus. Louisiana also hit into double figure blocks for the third straight outing, as FAU piled up 10 blocks.
It was a tightly contested opening set with six lead changes and nine ties. UL broke the final tie and created the final lead change when a Tataran kill provided an 18-17 lead.
UL wasn't done there, as a Claypoole ace and subsequent White kill extended the lead to 20-17. The Cajuns maintained the three-point edge before wrapping up the set after a Pereira attack error.
Louisiana took charge of the second set after a 6-1 run opened a 14-7 advantage. Three White kills, an Andrea Hole ace and Gavin and White block keyed the run. The Cajuns lead remained at six points or above the rest of the way to the 25-16 victory.
The Owls stormed out to a 16-3 lead in taking charge of the third set to prevent a Cajuns sweep. Louisiana managed to work its way back to within six at 18-12, but Chandler Hatton served the Owls back out to an 11-point lead, with FAU eventually taking the set 25-18.
Set four had a similar tone as the Owls built a 21-9 lead, with Hatton's serving once again helping pad the margin. The Ragin' Cajuns were able to whittle the lead down to within seven, before FAU forced a decisive fifth set.
The Cajuns let the fifth set slip away after building leads of 3-1 and 7-4. After FAU tied the score at 7-7, the teams would exchange the next 10 points and were knotted at 12-all. Louisiana committed three straight attack errors to allow the Owls to capture the come-from-behind win.
