Chris Weninger picked up his first collegiate individual victory Tuesday as the Cajuns golf team finished in second place at the Kansas Invitational which was played at the Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kansas.

“Obviously I am shocked that we did not take care of business today,” head golf coach Theo Sliman said. “I thought we were prepared after the way we played in the second round, but as it turns out we weren't. I expect this team to be back in the same situation during the season, and we will have this tournament to go back to for experience.”

The Ragin' Cajuns posted a final round score of 295 (+7) to finish second out of 12 teams with a three-round total of 876 as the team was just two shots back of the tournament champion UMKC.

“I'm very proud of Chris and his play throughout the tournament,” Sliman added. “To be in the winners circle as a sophomore is quite an accomplishment, and I expect great things out of him in the future.”

Weninger tallied a final round score of 73 (+1) to close out the tournament in a three-way tie for first place at two-under par (214). The sophomore is the first medalist for UL since 2008 when Devin Carrey led the Cajuns to a first place finish at the North Texas/Mean Green Classic in Denton, Texas.

Daily Young of Missouri State and David Smith of South Dakota State joined Weninger atop the leaderboard.

Senior Philipp Fendt picked up his first top-10 finish of the season after shooting one-over par (73) in his final round to finish in a tie for eighth overall (219).

Andrew Noto fell out of the top-10 after closing out the tournament with a third round score of 77 (+5) to end up in a tie for 15th (222), while junior Yohann Vora also scored for the Cajuns (223) posting the team's lowest score of the day (72).

UMKC (874), Louisiana (876), Missouri State (878), Cal State Fullerton (883) and Kansas (884) rounded out the top-five.

The Cajuns will have a week off before facing one of their toughest challenges of the season as they head to Raleigh, N.C. for the Wolfpack Challenge.
