Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns golf team picked up its first top-3 finish of the 2011-12 season Tuesday at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate held at the Hattiesburg Country Club in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The Cajuns finished eight shots back of tournament champion UAB after the Blazers stormed their way to the top of the leaderboard with a final round of 273 (-11).
“The guys fought hard and really wanted to win this tournament, but we just couldn't get over the hump and make a move,” head golf coach Theo Sliman said. “The promising thing is that we finished third in a tough field even though we didn't have a consistent performance from all five of our golfers.”
UL tallied a final round score of 282 to finish third out of 15 teams with a three-round total of 844.
Both Andrew Noto and Chris Weninger finished in the top-10 for the Cajuns. Noto continued his solid play shooting 68 (-3) to close out the tournament in a tie for third overall at eight-under par (205). The senior came up just one stroke short of finishing in a tie for first with Jason Shufflebottam of UAB and Blake Kelley of South Alabama for the individual medalist honors.
Weninger also shot under par for the tournament finishing in a tie for 10th at three-under par (201) after posting 69 in his final round.
“I was proud of our efforts today, and I think this was a great opportunity for us to grow as a team early in the season,” Sliman said. “Hopefully this top-3 finish is a sign of good things to come for our team.”
Philipp Fendt, who started the day in the top-10, saw his name fall down the leaderboard after carding a third round score of 74 (+2) to finish in a tie for 23rd (214). Brandt Garon also scored for the Cajuns (215).
UAB (836), South Alabama (841), Louisiana (844), Memphis (845) and Mississippi (846) rounded out the top-five.
The Ragin' Cajuns have a few days to rest before heading to the Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence, Kansas this weekend for the Kansas Invitational.
