9/11/2011 3:43:00 AM | Volleyball

The Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team came up empty on the final day of the CenturyLink Premier tournament in San Marcos, Texas, falling to Houston Baptist and Northwestern State at Strahan Coliseum.

Houston Baptist (9-3) stormed out of the gate averaging 16 kills over the first two sets and saw five players finish the match with two-plus kills per set en route to the 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-14) victory.

In the tournament finale the Cajuns posted a higher hitting percentage (.223 to .130) and held a 49-42 advantage in kills, but Northwestern State was able to come away with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 13-25, 25-20) victory.

Saturday's losses left Louisiana winless in the CenturyLink Premier and extended the squad's current losing streak to four matches.

The Ragin' Cajuns (5-6) return to action on Tuesday hosting Southern at Earl K. Long Gym. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Louisiana vs. Houston Baptist
Lesley Mirarchi and Tonice White led the Cajuns with eight kills. Freshman Kaylee Nemeth shined in her first career start, accumulating seven kills on 15 attempts.

UL struggled with sideouts, finishing the match at 36 percent (27-of-74). That helped HBU pull away in the first and third sets.

The Huskies saw four players reach eight kills led by Caiti Wenger who netted her tally on 11 attempts. HBU registered a .286 hitting percentage over the three sets.

HBU broke free from a 2-all tie in the opening set with an 8-0 run that was highlighted by five kills and two aces.

The Cajuns led on three occasions in the second set, the last coming at 17-16 on a block thrown up by Mirarchi and Mandi Gavin. Back-to-back kills and a block allowed the Huskies to end a 19-all stalemate on their way to a 25-20 triumph.

Seven points off the serve of Heather Leaverton staked the Huskies to an 8-1 advantage at the onset of the final set. The Cajuns pulled within three points, 16-13, on a kill by White then the tide turned on a Leaverton kill. After the kill, Leaverton served up seven consecutive points to seal the Huskies sweep.

Louisiana vs. Northwestern State
Lesley Mirarchi led the way for the Cajuns with 14 kills and in her debut at libero freshman Caitlin Auxilien tallied 16 digs.

The Demons were paced by a match-high 18 kills from Stacy DiFrancesco.

The first set featured 14 ties and eight lead changes. UL held a 21-20 lead, but fell behind on a Mandi Gavin service error and Taylor Meade attack error. After both teams exchanged service errors, the Demons notched back-to-back kills to claim the set 25-22.

NSU went up 2-0 in the match after a 5-0 run upped their lead in the second set to 19-12.

Louisiana stormed out to a 10-2 lead in the third set. The Cajuns stretched a 4-2 advantage with a Mirarchi kill, three blocks and an Auxilien ace.

The Demons used a 14-11 advantage in kills and a sideout percentage of 75 percent to complete the victory in the fourth set.
