UL Hits Strong Marks at Cole-Lancon Invite

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men and women's track & field team closed out the 2011 regular season with the Cole-Lancon Invitational on Saturday held at the Cajuns Track / Soccer Facility. UL notched 31 podium finishes, while numerous individuals set personal records in the final meet before the Sun Belt Conference Championships.

UL had five titles on Saturday, including Zachary France in the 5,000-meter run. France crossed the line in a personal-best of 14:41.24, a mark ranking third best in the Sun Belt Conference.

Brent Adams, a senior from Cut Off, claimed a new personal new mark in the high jump, clearing a height of 6-9 (2.06m). His height ranks fifth in the conference.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Jenna Piccou earned a personal record of 11:44.32 to post a top-10 mark in the SBC.

Taryn Simmons put up the second best mark in the league with a time of 1:02.50 to place second in the 400-meter hurdles.

The UL throwers had a strong day as Garrett Harkless was the top collegiate performer in the hammer throw. Harkless manned a distance of 181-10 (55.43m), while Jacob Domingue posted a mark of 176-2 (53.70) and Jacob Fontenot was third with a distance of 168-11 (51.48m).

Domingue, a senior from Erath, was the top collegiate shot put thrower with a toss of 56-7 ½ (17.26m). Albert Fournette finished second collegiately, marking 55-0 ¾ (16.78m), while Myle Melancon claimed third (53-3, 16.23m).

In the javelin throw, Kirsten Meche posted a top-5 league mark with a distance of 134-11 (41.85m) to claim third in the event.

The UL men and women's 4x100 relay teams both placed first. The men (Kenneth Bellard, Kelvan Turner, DeMarcus Runnels and Justin Jones) ran a time of 42.10. The Cajuns women (Jasmine Manuel, Morgan Breaux, Taryn Simmons and Alexis Malone) ran a time of 46.51.

Travis Blaize posted his first mark of the season in the pole vault, clearing a height of 13-7 (4.14m) to tie for second.

In the sprints, Justin Jones claimed second with a run of 10.80 in the 100-meter dash and finished third in the 200-meter in 22.12. Willie Allen was third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.52 and Keyondrick Boyins finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a run of 15.28.

For UL's women, Jasmine Anderson crossed the line in 11.91 and Alexis Malone ran 12 flat in the 100-meter dash to place second and third, respectively.

Kenneth Bellard claimed podium marks in the long jump and triple jump. The redshirt-junior finished third in the long jump with a distance of 22-1 ¾ (6.76m) and second in the triple with a mark of 45-10 (13.97m).

Jasmine Manuel notched a distance of 18-10 ½ (5.75m) to place second in the long jump. Tarvia Conway claimed a collegiate-best jump, making a mark of 38-7 ¾ (11.78m).  

Angela Roberts placed second in the high jump with a mark of 5-0 ½ (1.53m) and Amber Laurent was third in the pole vault at 10-0 (3.05m).

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action at the Sun Belt Conference Championships meet which will be held May 13-15 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
