Albert Fournette broke a 26-year old school record and 11 others claimed top-5 finishes for the Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men and women's track & field teams at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational held in Natchitoches on Saturday.
Fournette, a sophomore from Saline, won the shot put event with a throw of 57-7 ¾ (17.57m). He surpassed the previous UL record mark of 57-7 held by Robert Sippio since May 5, 1985. Fournette's mark ranks 14th in the NCAA East Region and is 29th nationally.
Also in the shot put, Myles Melancon set a personal best, tossing it a distance of 57-2 ¾ (16.68m). Jacob Domingue placed fifth with a distance of 54-9 ½ (16.98m).
Domingue claimed fourth in the discus, setting a personal best, with a throw of 173-6 (52.89m).
Zachary France, a sophomore from Slidell, placed second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:00.15. Freshman Patrick Spiller ran 17:22.51 clinching fifth, while Cody Tilley had a time of 17:45.10.
Hlfti Kahssay was third in the women's 5,000-meter with a time of 22:16.17.
In the hammer, Garrett Harkless notched a throw of 173-3 (52.82m), earning fourth. Jacob Fontenot cleared a distance of 172-9 (52.65m) to finish fifth.
In the 100-meter dash, Alexis Malone notched a time of 12.03 to place fifth overall. Amanda Roberts ran the 400-meter dash in 57.39 for fifth.
Junior Amber Laurent cleared a height of 10-6 (3.20m) to earn a top-5 marking.
Several others claimed personal bests at the meet including Ta'Shania Bean. The freshman had a career-best in the long jump of 18-1 (5.51m) and the triple jump 37-10 ½ (11.54m).
Morgan Breaux set a personal mark running the 200-meter dash in 24.95 seconds.
"This was a good meet for us," said interim head coach Paula Ogunbanjo. "A lot of our athletes stepped up and hit some huge marks and personal bests. I look forward to the next couple of meets before the Sun Belt Conference Championships."
Next Saturday April 23, the Cajuns return to Baton Rouge for the LSU Alumni Gold meet. UL will host another meet, the Cole-Lancon Invitational, on Saturday, April 30.
